SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,448, dated July 13, 1897.

Application filed March 24, 1897.

Be it known that I, SOLOMON K. MEYER- HOFF, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in a Combined Collar and Necktie, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to permanently combine a necktie with a collar, both made of washable material, so that the necktie and collar can be laundered and can be used as an attachment to a shirt or in some instances may form part of a shirt or shirtwaist, as fully described hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved combined collar and necktie, showing the necktie tied in the form of a double bow. Fig. 2 is asectional view. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the collar and necktie with the tie untied;

and Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are views illustrating the different steps in making the tie.

A is a collar, in the present instance of a turned-down type. This collar has two short extensionsa a, provided with buttonholes, so that the collar can be secured to the shirt, and extending from the collar is the tie portion B, which is of a sufficient length to make a double-loop tie and a fastening. I preferably form this portion B by splitting the neckband of the collar, one portion forming the short extension a, while the other forms the tie portion 13; but it will be understood that the tie portion may be secured to the collar permanently in any suitable manner. The end b of the tie portion B is preferably reduced and stiffened.

In using the combined collar and necktie the collar is first secured to the shirt in the ordinary manner and then the end Z7 of the tie portion is passed through the loop, as shown in Fig. 5, forming a bow on one side, then turned in and passed back through the loop and through the slot 19, forming the loop on the opposite side, and the end of the tie portion when passed through the slot, as shown in Fig. 6, extends back of the face-section of the collar, tending to hold the tie in proper position, so that the appearance is that of a detachable tie.

While I have shown the tie made of the same material as the collar, it may be made of a different material without departing from my invention, and the style of collar may also be changed.

I claim as my invention-- 1. As a new article of manufacture a combined necktie and collar having a collar portion, an extension on one end thereof, aloop on the extension and a slot so that the extension can be doubled upon itself and the end passed through the slot to form aretainer for the tie, substantially as described.

2. A combined necktie and collar, of the collar-section having two short projections a a, buttonholes therein, with a long extension B having a loop at a point near the collar, and a slot in the extension at one side of the loop, said extension having a reduced end so that by doubling the section through the loop and passing the end through the slot it will form a tie, substantially as described.
