NECK-WEAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 303,235, dated August 5, 1884.
Application filed February 2S, 1884.
T0 LEZ wwm it may concern-.-
Beit known that I, HOWARD SELVAGE, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kingsv and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neck-Wear, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide certain new and useful improvements in neckwear.
The invention consists in a neclewear shield provided with a diagonal or oblique edge.
The invention further consists in a pin projecting from the said edge, and adapted t hold the free end of the neckband.
Reference is to be hadto the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in
which similar letters oi' reference indicate corresponding parts in both the gures.
Figure l is a back view of a scarf provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the same on the line x x,Fig.1.
The sca-rf, cravat, or bow A is provided with the usual shield, B, secured on the back of the scarf at the top, and on the shield. B a supplemental shield, G, is fastened, one edge of which is on a diagonal or oblique line, either straight or curveddthat is, the supplemental shield has one lower corner cut away to form a diagonal edge, a, which may be straight or curved. From the middle of the edge a of the shield C, or a point near the middle, a pin, D, projects in the direction toward that lower corner of the shield B facing the edge a. Opposite the edge A a slot or opening is formed between the shields B and C, through which `opening the neckhand E can be passed.
(No model.)
The neckband is fastened by means of the pin D, after having been passed between the shields B C, and in order to be fastened it need not he twisted, so that both ends of the band will have the same inclination to the shield, and the strain will he the same on both ends ofthe band and both upper corners ofthe shield, thus holding the scarf straight.
I am aware that the head of a scarf has been formed of a piece of fabric folded to form a diagonal edge on its back, to which a pin is attached, and under which the free end of the neckband passes; and I am also aware that diagonal stiiTening-pieces, one of them provided with a pin, have been secured to the back of a scarf, and I therefore do 'not claim such inventions.
AHaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a cravat, scarf, or bow provided with the shield B, of pasteboard or like stiff material, of the supplementary shield C, made of pasteboard or like stiff material, and having curved edge a extending from, at, or near one lower corner of the first shield to or near the opposite upper corner, and a pin projecting from said curved edge, substantially as herein shown and described. p
