COLLAR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 793,387, dated June 27, 1905. Application filed January 10, 1905. Serial No. 240,495.

To all whom, it m/r/y concern;

Be it known that we, FRANK WILLIAM MUG- Foin) and WILLIAM HOWARD JOHN MOODY, subjects of the King of Great Britain, residing at London, E. O., England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collars, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to collars, and particularly to what are known as turn-down collars; and the object thereof is to provide a collar of this class which is so constructed that a string or other tie when in position therein and when the collar is on the neck may be pulled around in either direction freely and without binding.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of Which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of our improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a perspective front and plan view of a collar of the class specified embodying our invention, and Fig. 2 a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. y

In the drawings forming part of this specification we have shown at a an ordinary turndown collar comprising the usual inner neckband portion a and outer turn-down portion a. In practice this collar or collars of this class are usually made of three separate parts a central member 5 and inner and outer coverings W and I), the inner and outer coverings b and 6 being composed of linen or other fine material, while the central part?) is composed of heavy, stiffer, or stronger material.

In the practice of our invention We form at the opposite sides of the central back part of the neckband portion (A of the collar pocketshaped parts 0, which are much thinner than the said neckband portion of the collar, and these thin parts 0 are formed by cutting out or removing the central part I) of the collar, and in practice the inner and outer parts Z2 and b are stitched around the spaces formed by cutting out parts of the central portion 6 of the collar.

ln Fig. 2 the edge of the central part b of the collar which is cut out to form the spaces or thinner portions care turned up, as shown at (Z, which thickens the collar along the lines cl but this construction is not absolutely necessary, and the edges of the part 7) of the collar where the thinner portions 0 are formed may or may not be turned up or hemmed, as shown in Fig. 2. In Fig. 2 we have also shown at e a section of a necktie, and it will be seen that by forming the collar as herein described, so as to produce the thinner portions 0 at the opposite sides of the central back portion of the collar, enlarged spaces are formed for the necktie, and the necktie is therefore not pinched or securely held as when collars of this class are made in the usual way, and the said necktie may be freely drawn around the neck under the collar in either direction.

It will be observed that the collar is provided at the back with the usual buttonholef, and at this point the collar or the neckband portion thereof is made of the usual thickness and strength, and the thinner parts 0 of the neckband portion of the collar are at the opposite sides of the central back portion of the collar and also at the point where the greatest pressure is usually applied to the necktie and by means of which it is hard to pull the necktie around in either direction.

In the construction shown the thinner parts 0 of the neckband portion of the collar are segmental at their upper edges; but this formation is not essential and the central part of the neckband portion of the collar may be cut out or removed, so as to form thinner portions 0 of any desired shape, the only object being to make the parts of the neckband portion of the collar thinner, so as to provide spaces for the necktie and enable it to be pulled around in either direction by pulling on the front ends thereof.
