SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,732, dated November 27, 1894.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, ALBIN HAJOS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful lmprovement in Cravats, of which the following is a specification.

Myinvention relates to an improvement in cravats of the kind to be folded by hand, and more particularly to that class in which the cravat is combined, or formed integral with the collar.

My invention consists in the general and specific details of construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the drawings-f-Figure 1 represents a standing collar provided with a cravat integral therewith and having one long and one short end. Fig. 2 is a view of the cravat shown in Fig. 1 detached from a collar. Fig. 3 is a view of the combined collar and cravat shown in Fig. 1 in the first step of folding. Fig. 4 is a View of the combined collar and cravat shown in Fig. 3 in the Iinalstep of folding and before locking, as with a button. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4, showing the button applied; and Fig. 6 is a vertical, transverse section on the line 7 of Fig. 5.

A represents the cravat proper, comprising the stript, which may be enlarged into the form of a standing or turn-down collar, and provided toward each extremity with a perforation s. Beyond the perforation s, on one side, the strip is slitted as shown at o', and from this point the cravat is deliected downward, as shown at q. At the opposite end beyond the other perforation s the strip A is cut to present the double taper 10 and the double taper 0, at the junction of which double tapers is provided the perforation n,

while at the end of the double taper o is provided the perforation m beyond whichl the material is deflected, as shown at Z. y At about the point of the perforation m, the material is cut out on a curved line, as shown at 7c. The center of each double taper is represented in the drawings by a dotted line respectivelyp and o', this line designating the folding line of each loop.

The operation of folding the cravat made from the stri p described, whether forming part of the collar or not, as is shown in Figs. 3 to 5, is effected as follows: The strip t is curved and one edge adjacent to one perforation sis introduced into the slit r in such a manner that the two perforations s shall exactly coincide. The remainder of the strip, or that be tween the perforations sand the extremity Z, is then curved upon itself in a complete circle, to cause the perforation m to coincide with the perforations s, while the end l projects in the opposite direction to the end q. The center of the prolongation of the strip is then forced inward, to canse the perforation n to coincide with the perforations m and s, and the shank h of the button B is introduced into all the perforations,vand thehead h of the button then applied in the usual manner with detachable buttons. The face of the button B is by preference given the appearance of the central fold of a cravat, so that the effect obtained from a cravat made and folded in this manner, with the button B applied, is substantially like that obtained with the ordinary made up cravat of the same general character. In practice the base h2 of the button Would be at the inner side of the neckband m of the shirt and the shank would pass through a perforation or button-hole therein.

Where the strip A is separate from the collar, Iy find it desirable to make it in dierent sizes,-each size adapted to a collar of a certain sizeg--but Where it forms part of the collar this is obviously unnecessary.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' A cravat, comprising a strip A having the plain part tand one end formedy with the double tapers oand p, dellected portion Zand cutaway part 7o andthe opposite end with the defiected portion q and slit fr, perforations suitably located therein, in combination with a retaining button adapted to enter the perforations, as and for the purposes set forth.
