COLLAR.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS J. HRUBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State. of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Collars, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to collars of the type known as the stand-up turn-down, or doublefold, variety, involving an inner band provided with button-holes and an outer band connected at its upper edge to the inner band. As collars of this type have been hitherto provided, they are objectionable as no means are provided for holding the collar on the shirt-band in a position for maintaining the front edges of the collar in proper position, with the result of causing the collar to gape and present an untrim appearance.

My object is to overcome the above-stated disadvantage, and to that end -I provide a collar having means for holding it in proper posit-ion on the neck-band.

Referring to the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper portion of a shirt showing it as provided with a collar constructed in accordance with my invention and forming one of the embodiments thereof, this view showing the ends of the outer band broken away, and by dotted lines the positions assumed by such outer-band ends, the interlocking tongue being shown in dotted lines in the position it assumes when the collar is fastened to the neck-band. Fig. 2 is a section taken at the line 2 on Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrow; and Fig. 3 is a broken perspective view of a modification of the construction illustrated in Fig. 1.

According to the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, one end of the inner band of the collar represented at 5 is provided with a tongue 6 which extends beyond the button-hole 7 in the band 5 and contains a button-hole 8 in its outer end; The other end of the band 5 is provided with the usual tab 9 containing a button-hole 10, and a slight distance beyond the hole 10 is a slot 11 which extends transversely of the band 5 but not necessarily in true vertical position, nor at right-angles to the median line of the band 5.

The preferred manner of applying the collar to the neck-band of a shirt, such as that represented at 12, is as follows: The

collar is first buttoned at its rear buttonhole over the button 14: secured in the button-hole 15 of the neck-band 12. It is then buttoned at the hole 7 over a button 16 at the front of the neck-band. The tongue 6 is then inserted through the slot 11 from the rear side of the band 5 and bent back toward the button 16. The band 5 is then buttoned at its button-hole 10 over the button 16 and the free end of the tongue 6 is thereupon buttoned at its button-hole 8 over the button 16. The tongue 6 in this p0sition lies between the inner and outer bands 5 and 17 of the collar and overlies the tab 9 on the band 5 as represented in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and in full lines in Fig. 2.

It will be understood that the employment ofthe tab 9 of Fig. 1 is not indispensable though desirable. Where such tab is omitted, as is illustrated by the construction shown in Fig. 3, the holding of the collar on the neck-band would be accomplished by the tongue 6 alone. Furthermore, in many instances where the button 16 must extend through portions of the collar, button-holes of the form shown need not be used, but, instead, holes normally of approximately the same size as the head of the button may be provided. As for examples, such other form of button-holes may be provided instead of the button- holes 7 and 10 in Figs. 1, 2 and 3.

It will be manifest that by employing a tongue which is carried by one end of the inner band and interlocks with the wall of a slot in the other band and is held in such position, the ends of the collar are firmly held in position against gaping or spreading, whereby the proper positioning of the free ends of the band 17 is insured, and the collar presents a trim appearance.

In practice it would be desirable to construct the tongues of sections which would overlap at the portions of the tongues lying Within the slots when the collars are buttoned, and thus form natural bending lines such as are formed at the juncture of the inner and outer bands 5 and 17 as collars of this type are commonly constructed, whereby, when the ends of the tongues are bent back upon their adjacent portions preparatory to ironing them, during the laundrying operation, they will fold naturally along such bending lines.

While I have illustrated certain specific embodiments of my invention, I do not wish to be understood as intending to limit it to such embodiments, as Various changes and alterations may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention. What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,

A collar of the character set forth, with one end-portion of its inner band containing a slot and its other end-portion provided. r.

with a tongue adapted to be inserted through 10 end, for the purpose set forth.
