To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JosnrI-I C. MoT'r, a citizenof the United States, and residing at Great Neck, L. I., in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in C01- lars, of which the following is a specifica tion, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains' to make and use the same.

This invention relates to collars and particularly to turn-down collars, and still more particularly to turn-down collars made of celluloid or rubber, and the object thereof is to provide a collar of this class with means whereby it may be more easily attached to the neckband of a shirt and detached therefrom than is possible with collars of this class as now made, and which will further prevent the breaking of the collar at the points where the front ends of the turn-down portion of the collar meet or join the top edge portion ofthe neckband partof the collar.

Celluloid or rubber collars, as heretofore constructed, frequently break at the buttonholes or ends of the fold owing to the fact that the long tab at one end of the collar must be inserted under the fold at the opposite end of-the collar, after the collar has been secured to the collar buttons. As celluloid or rubber of the thickness used in collars, is easily broken by bending the same, it will be readily seen that the bend ing of the long tab in inserting it under the fold is the cause of the collar breaking at the buttonholes and ends of the fold. It is to provide a celluloid collar, which will not be subject to the above defects, that I have devised the collar which forms the subject matter of my present invention.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are desig nated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a turndown collar of the class specified made according to my invention and showing the front end portions thereof connected;

In the drawing forming part of this specilication I have shown at a an ordinary turndown celluloid collar comprising a neck band portion a and a turn-down portion a" and one front end of the neckband portion a is provided with the usual short tab a and the other end with a tab a The tab a is or may be of the usual form and dimensions, but the tab (i is much shorter than the tab a and its edge extends diagonally downward from the point a where said tab joins the neckband portion of the collar to the bottom or lower corner a of said tab.

The tab a is provided with the collar button-hole b which is similar in form to a button-hole b in the central back part of the neckband portion of the collar, and said button-hole Z2 is arranged horizontally in the usual manner, but the tab (6 is provided with a vertically arranged buttonhole 0, the bottom part of which is much larger than the top part.

In the practice of my invention, I also secure to the neckband portion of the collar rearwardly of the tab (4 a supplemental flexible and foldable celluloid tab (Z, this connection being preferably made by means of small eyelets e, .and this supplemental tab projects beyond the tab a when in use, the projecting part thereof and the vertical or transverse dimensions thereof being clearly indicated in Figs. 1, 2 and al, and being approximately the same as those of the ordinary overlapping tab of a turndown collar of this class. 'When the collar is secured on the neck by buttoning it both at the back and front and the supplemental tab (Z is in its normal position, the front of the collar presents the appearance indicated in Fig. 1. In the operation of buttoning the front ends of the collar to the neckband of a shirt the tab a is first buttoned, after which the tab at is pressed back so that the button will pass through the bottom part of the button-hole c, after which the end portion of the collar provided with the button-hole is moved downwardly so that the shank of the button will enter the upper part of the button-hole 0, and the tab (4 is passed under the adjacent turn-down part a of the opposite end portion of the collara's shown in Fig. 3. This operation is easily performed by reason of the fact that the tab a is of very small horizontal dimensions; .and after the tabs a and a have been secured, as above described, the supplemental tab cl is passed under the turn-down part a of the opposite end portion-of the collar as clearly indicated in Fig. 1. In this operation the supplemental tab d is first folded backwardly while the tab 01, is being connected with the button after which the supplemental tab is folded so that the free end thereof can be passed under the turn down part a of the collar and, in order that this operation may be easily performed, the supplemental tab cl is made much thinner and 'more flexible than the other parts of the collar.

When the supplemental tab is inserted in the folded portion at the opposite endof the collar, the upper edge of said tab will engage the undersurface of the fold and securely lock the collar in closed position.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that the front part of the collar presents a neat and finished appearance when secured in position, and the button-holes and button are concealed by the supplemental tab (Z, and said supplemental tab also aids in holding the front end portions of the collar in proper position and also aids in preventing the accidental disconnection of V the ends of the collar.

In Fig. 5 of the accompanying drawing, I have shown a slight modification of the construction shown in Figs. 1 to l inclusive, and hereinbefore described, and this modification consists in substituting for the button-hole c in the tab a and in the bottom edge portion of said tab, a downwardly and outwardly inclined slot 0 with this construction the end of the collar which is provided with the tab a may be easily connected with the collar button by simply holding the tab a in proper position and moving it downwardly so that the shank of the button will pass into the slot 0 and when the tab a has been passed under the turn-down part a of the collar as hereinbefore described,-and the supplemental tab (1 moved into the position shown in Figs. 1 to 3, the said end portion of the collar with which the tab a is connected will be securely held in position and cannot become accidentally detached from the collar button or from the other end portion of the collar.

The inner end portion of the supplemental tab (Z is much narrower than the outer end portion thereof, both the top and bottom edges thereof being tapered, in the construction shown, and this form of said tab is designed in .order to facilitate the folding thereof and .the .manipulation thereof, as

herein described, and the top portion of said tab may be inclined or tapered to a greater extent than as shown in the drawing, if desired.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l. A turndown celluloid collar, one end of its neckband being provided with the usual toward the lower edge of the tab, and a supplemental tab secured to the last named end of the neckband rearwardly of the buttoir hole of the shortest tab, said supplemental tab being of greater length than the other tabs and adapted to be inserted under the fold at theopposite end of the collar and having its upper edge engaging the undersurface of said fold for holding the front of the collar closed and concealing the front collar button.

2. A turndown celluloid collar, one end of its neckband being provided with the usual short tabhaving a horizontally arranged buttonhole, and the other end with a shorter tab having a vertically arranged buttonhole, the edge'of the shorter tab extending diagonally downward from the fold of the collar toward the lower edge of the tab, and a supplemental tab secured to the last'named end of the neckband rearwardly of the buta tonhole .of the shortest tab, said I supplemental tab being of greater length than the other tabs and adapted to be inserted under the fold at the opposite end of the collar and having its upper edge engaging the undersurface of said fold for holding the front of the collar closed and concealing the front collar button. 5

3. A turndown celluloid collar, one end of its neckband being provided with, the usual short tab having a buttonhole, and the other end with a shorter tab having a buttonhole, the edge of the shorter tab extending diagonally downward from the fold of the collar toward the lower edge of the tab, and a supplemental celluloid tab secured to the last named end of the neckband rearwardly of the buttonhole of the shortest tab, said supplemental tab being of greater length than the other tabs and adapted to be inserted under the fold at the opposite end of the collar and having its upper end engaging the undersurface of said fold for holding the front of the collar closed and concealing th front collar button, and the secured end portion of the supplemental tab beingnarrower than the free end portion thereof to facilitate bending the same.

4. A turndown celluloid collar, one end of its neckband being provided with thensual short tab. having a horizontally arranged izo buttonhole to receive the front collar button, and the other end of the neckband being provided with a shorter tab, the edge of which extends diagonally downwardly from the fold of the collar toward the lower edge of the neckband, said shorter tab having a vertical buttonhole of larger area at its lower end than at its upper end, and a supplemental tab of less thickness than the collar material and of greater length than the other tabs, secured to the front of the neckband rearwardly of the buttonhole of the shortest tab, and adapted to be inserted into the folded portion at the opposite end of the collar after said tabs have been buttoned, 15 the upper edge of the supplemental tab, When the collar is closed, engaging the inner surface of the fold and locking the collar in closed position.
