Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Mosns L. HAWKS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Tie-Guards and Collar-Buttons, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a combined tie guard and collar button, and has for its prin-- cipal objects to provide a device of this character which is simple and inexpensive to manufacture, and is efiicient in preventing the sticking of the tie.

Further objects are to provide a device of this character which securely holds the tie in place and also in itself is securely held in place to the collar and the neck band.

The various further objects and advantages will more fully appear hereinafter.

Figure 1 is a perspective view, partly broken away, of a collar and neck tie, the latter being held in place by my improved device.

My improved device is particularly adapted for the well lmown form of foldover collar in the manipulation of which difliculty is usually experienced in adjusting the tie. In prior devices for remedying this defect, difficulty has been experienced either in the matter of securely holding the guard or in the holding of the tie within the guard, or the complication which results from clumsy devices for the purpose. In my present invention, the tie guard and collar button are formed of a unitary strip of metal and the same securely holds the collar to the neck band while also holding the neck tie therein.

Referring in detail to the drawings, particularly to Figs. 1 to 7 the collar 10 of the well known fold-over type has the tie 11 disposed within the fold. My improved device holding the tie as well as holding the collar to the band, consists of a strip of metal having the upper and lower portions 12 and 13 between which is disposed the collar button 14, on one side, and the upper and lower hooks 15 and 16, on the other side. These hooks are simply formed by turning over the ends of the portions 12 and 18. The collar button 14 has the head portion 17 and the neck portion 18 formed by the doubling of the material back on itself as will further appear.

Theneck portion 18 extends transversely of the body portions 12, 13, and is formed with a broad base 19 (Figs. 3 and 6) which substantially fills the length of the buttonhole, and thus'firmly holds the guard in position without skewing when the tie is manipulated. The device is preferably made as follows A blank, as shown in Fig. 6, is first stamped out with the proper configuration to form the various parts. Then the intermediate portion constituting the head and neck is struck down as shown in the full lines in Fig. 7 The neck portions are then brought together, thus doubling the metal for the neck portion and also for the head portion, and then the ends are turned over to form the hooks as shown in dotted lines.

In Fig. 8, a modification of the invention is shown in which the'lower portion 13 and the hooks 16 are omitted. Otherwise, the

I construction may be the same as in the preferred form described.

It will be noted that the head portion 14 extends above and below 'the neck portion and thus forms a button which properly holds the device in place, and together with the broad neck portion, prevent the device from becoming undone as the tieis manipulated or at other times.

It will be understood, of course, that various modifications may be resorted to within the spirit of the invention without departing from the scope of the claim.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

A collar attachment made in one piece comprising a guard for a necktie, a spacer for the collar and a button for securing the attachment together With the collar to the neck-band of a shirt, said button being formed and consisting of a part of the single strip of thin bendable material struck out and bent in upon itself so as to form the head and shank portions thereof, said but- Witnesses NATHAN COHEN, MINNIE S.
