Description

(No Model.)
E. 1 SMITH.
NECK WEAR.
Patented July WITNESSES: INVENTORL I 2. fi I BY ATTORNEYS.
N. PETERS. PMIO-Lkbolnphar. Walhingfion, B. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN D. SMITH, on NEW YonK, N. Y.
NECK-WEAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 322,207, dated July 14, 1885. Application filed June 17, 1884. (No model To all whom it may concern;
Be it known. that I, EDWIN D. SMITH, of the city, county, and State'of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neck-\Vear, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide embossed neck-wear; and a further object of my invention is to provide neclcwear made of paper.
The invention consists in an embossed scarf, bow, or cravat.
The invention further consists in a scarf, bow, or cravat made of paper.
The invention further consists in the combination, with the above-mentioned scarf, bow, or cravat, of devices for holding it in place on the collar-button.
The invention also consists in various parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be set forth hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part 'of this specification, in whichv similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the paper or other blank for making my improved embossed neck: wean. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same,
showing it folded. Fig. 3is a cross-sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a front view of the upper part of the neck-wear or scarf. Fig. 5 is a rear face view of the device for fastening it. Fig. 6 is a crosssectional elevation on the line a: m, Fig. 1.
I make the scarfs, bows, ties, &c., of paper, muslin, silk, leather, or any other material of the nature of paper or fabric, and the said material, is placed in a suitable press or between suitable dies, and is embossed so that its outer surface will have raised andlowered parts shaped the same as a scarf, bow, tie, 800., made of fabric in the usual manner.
The paper or fabric scarf can be made of plain material, or the material can be colored, printed, stamped, 8tc., before being embossed, and the material can be colored, shaded, &c., in such a manner "that the shaded parts in the embossed scarf will appear in precisely the same position as the shaded parts in a scarf made of fabric. 1
In the drawings, I have shown a paper scarf made in imitation of a fabric scarf provided with two wings that are crossed; but it is evident that the paper or other embossed scarf .can have any desired shape.
On the paper or leather of which the neckwear is made designs are printed, lithographed, or produced in black or in one or .more colors, in imitationfof silk, calico, or
other fabrics, or the colors can be produced in such a manner as to produce imitations of the creases and folds in the cravat or other neck-wear.
On the upper end of the paper scarf A a wing, 13, is formed, in the inner end of which an aperture, 0, is formed, which is in com munication with a triangular aperture, D, formed in the top of the scarf. On the side of the scarf, near the top, two headed wings, E, are formed, and corresponding'recesses, F, are formed in the wing B, at the side edges.
To securethe scarf on the collar-button, I have provided a metal frame or plate, H, having two downwardly-projecting wings, J, and a latch, K, pivoted to the plate H at the upper end and provided near its lower end with an aperture, V, adapted to receive a projection or spring-tongue, T, on the plate H for V the purpose of locking the latch K on the plate H. The latch K is provided at its-upper end with an aperture, L, having an extension, M.
The plate H may be provided with a front aperture through whichthe collar-button will show. If desired, the plate H may also be provided with the upwardly-projecting wings N, which are to be used with turndown collars. The lower part of the plate H is passed through the opening 0 in the wing B, then the wing B is folded down on the rear of the .scarf A, the wings E are folded in the recesses F, and the plate H is pushed down so that the metal wings J cover the wings E, thus holding them in place. The bottom catch of the plate H passes through an aperture, 0, in the wing B, from the inner to the outer surface,
and a prong, 1?, formed on the plate H, passes through an aperture, Q, in the wing B, and is bent over the outer surface of the wing B, and
a tongue, S, on the free end of the flap or wing B is pasted to the back of the scarf A, whereby the plate H is held in the top of the scarf, and
the flap or wing B is held on the back of the scarf. The upper part of the front of the plate H shows through the opening at the upper end of the scarf, which upper part of the plate H can be embossed, enameled, engraved, 0r ornamented in any other suitable manner.
To fasten the scarf, the collar-button is passed through the opening L in the latch K, the shank of the button is passed into the extension M of the opening L, and then the latch is swung down against the plate H, the edge of the aperture 0 in the latch catching on the projection on the lower end of the plate H. If a scarf with a neckband is used, the neckband is secured to one wing, J, and is passed under the other and under the latch K, the free end of the neckband being held in place by thelatch K, which presses it against the back of the plate H.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an improved article of manufacture, an embossed bow, scarf, or cravat, on which ornaments or designs are produced in one or more colors different from the background, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a bow, scarf, or cravat, made of paper, on which ornaments or designs are produced in one or more colors different from the background, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with a paper scarf provided with the wings E on the side edges, of
the flap or wing B, formed on the scarf and provided with recesses F for receiving the wings E, substantially as herein shown and described.
4-. The combination, with apaper scarf having an aperture, D, and provided with a wing or flap, B, having an aperture, 0, of a metal frame or plate held in the top of the scarf, the
'upper part of the frame showing through the aperture D at the top of the front of the scarf, substantially as herein shown and described.
5. The combination,with the paper scarf A,
