Description

w Patented Aug. 6, |90I. C. H. LOWE.
N E C K TIE (Application led Aug. 11, 1900.)
q(No Modell.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. LOWE, 0F MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
`NECKTIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 679,763, dated August 6, 1901.
Application led August 1l, 1900. Serial No. 26,567. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. LOWE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Neckties, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to improvements in neckties'. y
The objects of my invention are, first, to provide a tie with a form of holding device adapted to engage any ordinary collar-button and which while allowing the tie to be readily engaged with or disengaged from the button by proper manipulation will also hold the tie securely in position when adjusted without the aid of any additional holding devices, and, second, to provide a tie-holding device with a suitable form for the bow, whereby no additional filling is required.
In the following description reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which-e Figure l is a rear view of a necktie embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the bow, with dotted lines indicating the position of the button when the tie is in use. Figs. 3, 4C, 5, and 6 are views of the holding device as seen from the rear in vertical section, from the front,
and from the top, respectively.
Like parts are indicated by the same reference-numerals throughout `the several views.
A'holdiug-plate l is embedded in the cloth 2 of the tie, as best illustrated in Fig. 2. It is provided with a button-receiving aperture 3 suiiciently large to admit the head of any ordinary button and provided with an upwardly-extending notch 4, the sides of which converge to the slit 5. The latter extends from the apex of the notch 4 to a button-retaining aperture 6, the latter being adapted to receive the shank of the button, but not large enough to permit -the passage of the head.
plate 8 is also preferably secured to the holding-plate 1 with its upper central portion bulged outwardly, as best shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6.
The cloth of the tie is adjusted in any suitable manner over the form 8 and plate l, the edges of the cloth being folded in around the apertures 3 and 6 and glued or otherwise secured to the interior surface of the plate, as best shown at 9 in Fig. 2.
I attach great importance to the provision of the notch 4 with sides converging to the slit 5 leading to the aperture 6, for the sides of thenotch serve as guides for the shank of the button, while the sides of the slit close together after the shank has passed into the aperture 6, so that the button is locked in the latter aperture with sufficient rigidity to prevent accidental displacement.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a necktie, the combination with the cloth covering of the tie; of the fiat holdingplate,or shield 1,0f comparatively stille, though flexible material, having a concave upper edge and serving as backing for the tie, said holding-plate being formed with an aperture adapted to receive the head of an ordinary collar-button; and a second aperture adapted to receive the shank of the button, but of less size than the head thereof, said plate also having a slit connecting the apertures, and a notch formed in the edge of the first-mentioned aperture, with convergent sides leading to the slit, neither of said apertures being open to the side edges of the plate.
2. In a necktie, the holding-plate l formed of comparatively stiff heavy fabric, such as felt, and provided with apertures therein, located one above the other, the lower aperture being adapted to receive Ythe head of an ordinary button, and the other being of less size than the -head of the button, said plate being also provided with an opening communicating between said apertures of less width than the button-shank, but having sides adapted to yield sufficiently to permit the passage of the shank when subjected to pressure, neither of said apertures being open to the side edges of the plate, and said plate being adapted to permit the cloth of the tie to be stitched or IOO glued thereto along its outer edges, and along the edges of said apertures. Y
3. In anecktie, a holding-plate of exible material formed of compressed felt, provided with two apertures, one of which is adapted to receive the head of a collar-button and the other being of less diameter than the head of the button, and with a slit or passage communicating between said apertures, of less width than the diameter of the shank of the button, and cementitious material covering the sides of said slit or passage.
4:. In a necktie, a holding-plate of flexible material with two apertures, one of which is adapted to receive the head of a collar-button,
CHARLES H. LOWE.
