BUTTON AND FASTENING.-
No} 293,517. Patented Peb. 1 2, 1884.
, UNITED STATES ,E TENT OFFICE.
GEORGE-W. PRENTIGE, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
BUTTON AN'D FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,517, dated February 12, 1884.
Applicationlfiled December 26, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. PRENTIOE, a citizen of: the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Buttons and Fastenings; and I do declare the following 'to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had i to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The subject of the present invention is a solid leatherbutton bar ing astaple-shaped fastener securely embedded therein, with the sharppoints of the fastener projecting a suitable distance below the lower surface of the same, whereby the said button may be readily, attached to a fabric or material, in connection with an under plate or washer formed of metal, leather, or other suitable pliable material, as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically designated in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents an enlarged vertical horizontal section of my improved button, with the prongs of the same passed through a fabric and an under washer; Fig. 2, a similar view with the prongs bent over the washer and into the lower surface of the fabric to secure the button in place, and Fig. 3 represents an enlarged perspective View of a modification;
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
In carrying outmy'invention, the buttonhead A, which may be of any suitable size and shape, is preferably formed of leatherscrap sole-leather being utilized for the purpose-which is pressed or formed into the desired shape, either before or after the fast-' ening-prongs B are attached thereto, the said fastening-prongs being inserted in the said head by first cutting orpunching a slit or opening into the under surface of the buttolr head while it is preferably in a wet or. moist state, so as to allow the edges of the slit or opening to yield for the introduction of the upper part of the staple-shaped fastener. The butt0n-head A. after the insertion of the fastening-prongs B therein, is subjected to great the purpose, which compress the leather ening-prong's, and at the same time give the finishing shape to the said buttonllead, which may, after it becomes dry, be stained or japanned in suitable colors.
The washer 0, used in connection with my improved button and fastening, is also preferably made of leather, which is compressed into the desired shape, and provided with'one or more holes for the passage of the prong or prongs of the fastener B, although the said washer may be formed of metal or other suit able material; but, as already stated, leather the button is attached to the fabric the leather washer allows of afree and pliable movement of the several parts, yet at all times securely holding the same together. w
The button is capable of being readily attached to the desired fabric or material by passing the sharp points of the fastener down through the same and through the washer G, the ends of the prongs being then bent in reverse directions upon said washer and back into'the under surface of the fabric or mate .rial, as fully shown in the drawings.
7 Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described combined button and fastening-prongs, consisting of the solid leather head A, compressed upon the staple-shaped fastener B, and adapted for operation in connection with the washer O, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
V GEORGE IV. PRENTIOE. Witnesses CHARLES GREENE, E. FISHER.
