GEORGE W. PRENTICE, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
BUTTON AND FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,353, dated December 18, 1883.
Application filed September 17, 1883.
To 00% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. PRENTIOE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Button and Fastener; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My present invention relates to improve ments in that class of combined buttons and fastening devices for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted to me under date of December 26, 1882, and numbered 269,705, in which the button-head is formed solid with the fastening prong or prongs; and my present improvements consist, essentially, in forming the button-head from leather, pulp, or other kindred material, and then passing a staple-shaped connection down through the central portion thereof from the upper surface until the base of said stapleshaped connection rests upon the upper surface of said button and the sharp prongs project below the base of the same, for the ready attachment of the said button and prongs to any desired fabric or material, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of my complete device, Fig. 2, a similar View as attached to a fabric, and Fig. 3 a sectional view of a modification thereof.-
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
(No model.)
In carrying out my invention, the button or head a, preferably provided with the rounded neck or shank portion,b,is formed from leather, pulp, or analogous material into the desired shape. The points or prongs of the stapleshaped connection a are then forced down through the central portion of the button or head so formed until the base of the stapleconnection lies flat upon the upper surface of the button or head and the sharp prongs project down below the 138.2 of the same, as fully shown in Fig. 1.
The stapleshaped connection may either have its prongs located a small space apart, as shown in Fig. 1, or the prongs may lie fiat against each other side-by side, as shown in Fig. 3.
In the operation of attaching the device to a fabric or other material, the prongs are pushed through the same until the base or neck portion of the button lies flat.upon the upper surface of the material and the ends of the prongs project through upon the under surface, where they are bent at right angles thereto, to firmly secure the button in place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is As an improved article of manufacture, the hereindescribed button and fastener combined, consisting of the leather head a, having rounded neck I), and provided with the staple c, which projects down through said head and neck portion, substantially as shown, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. PREN'IICE.
