J. P. THAYER.
\ BUTTON-FASTWEB. r No. 276,645. Patented May 1,'1883.
N PETERS. mawmmgnphaf. wasmnigmr ac.
, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
JAMES F. THAYER, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
BUTTON-'FA-STEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming pai-t ef Lettere Patent No. 276,645, dated Mey 1, Issa. i
Application filed January 8, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES F. THAYER, a citizen of the United States, residing atV Provi. dence, in the county of Providence and State ot' Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved fastening for attaching buttons to shoes, Src.; and it consists of a fastener formed from hollow or tubular wire and adapted to be inserted through the fabric or material and clinched by a suitable setting-instrument.
To illustrate my invention I have selected one Vof staple form, although my improvement can be used as well in other forms of fasteners.
In the accompanying drawings, made enlarged,-Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a fastener, partly in section, as made from hollow round wire. Fig. 2 represents the saine as attached to the fabric with a button and suitably clinched. Fig. 3 represents a moditied form of hollow wire. Fig. 4 represents a modilied form of clinching or securing a tubular staple, and partly in section.
Again referring to the drawings, A represents a staple provided with an eye, a, and
Atwo downwardly-projecting prongs, a', the
whole made from hollowv wire, as shown. Instead of leaving the ends ofthe prongs square, as shown, they can be chamfered or beveled off for more readily penetrating the material.
I am awarethat round and other forms of solid wire have been used for button-fastenersj but the use of hollow or tubular wire for a button-fastener, so far as Iknow, is both new and novel.
Among the advantages possessed by afastener made from hollow wire over solid wire is lightness combined with great strength and stiffness, the value of tubular columns, Src., being `well known in the mechanic arts.. Another feature possessed by my fastener can be shown in the process ofclinching, whereby the prongs, after passing through the fabric and bent, are still further clinched by having the Vthrough said fabric or material F and clinched thereunder. Y
In Fig. 4 is represented another form ot' clinching a tubular fastener, whereby the ends a' thereof are upset or rolled over by suitable ldies after passing the prongs through the fabric.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isr l. As an improved article of manufacture, a button-fastener made from tubular or hollow wire bent into form, substantially as described and shown.
2. The button fastener herein described, made from a piece of hollow wire, the ends thereof bent so as 4to form the staple-shaped fastener A, consisting of an eye orloop, a, and two downwardlyprojecting prongs, a', the whole arranged and adapted to be used substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presenceof two witnesses.
' JAMES E. THAYER.
