BUTTON-FASTENER- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,506, dated May 13, 1884.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, RICHARD SANFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.-

My invention has for its object 'to provide a new and improved button-fastener of that class having a table and several prongs bent at right angles thereto, one of said prongs being adapted for retaining an eye-shank button, the several prongs being clinched on the under surface of the fabric.

My invention relates more particularly to the arrangement and formation of the prongs and the manner of clinching the same.

Heretofore it has been the custom to provide a fastener -table with a number of prongs of a uniform width their entire length, or of a gradual curve or taper from heel to point,said prongs being subsequently clinched, as before stated, on the under surface of the fabric in attachment.

My present invent-ion consists, practically, of a table provided with two or more prongs, one of which is provided with an enlarged end portion, and adapted to be bent on the under surface of the fabric, the other prong or prongs being bent at right angles to and over said prong, back of the enlargement,substantially as hereinafter described.

To illustrate my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawings a fastener having two prongs at right angles to each other, which number may be increased, if desired, without departing from the spirit or intent of this invention.

Figure 1 is a View of a blank from which the fastener is formed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the fastener ready for attachment. Fig. 3 is a view of the fastener with button attached to fabric complete. Fig. 4 is aview of the under surface of the fabric, showing the manner of locking the prongs.

shown, and is formed with shoulders a on either side. These prongs are subsequently bent at right angles to the table a, one prong being bent to form the staple e, as shown in Fig. 2.

The method of attachment is as follows: A button-eye is first passed into the staple e. The prongs are then passed through the fabric from the upper side. The prong c is first bent down onto the surface. The prong b is then bent over the prong 0, back of the shoulders a, as fully shown in Fig. 4, thus securely attaching the button to the fabric.

The advantage of this method of attachment is readily seen, as the prong 1) completely encircles the prong 0, back of the shoulders to, thereby securely locking them together, thus preventing the fastener from becoming detached by use.

As before stated, the number of side prongs may be increased, if desired, and bent over the enlargcdend prong, the same as herein described, with one prong at the side, the object being to provide one prong with an enlargement, the portion back of which being encircled by a number of' prongs, thereby locking the device to a fabric during attachment.
