BUTTON PASTENER.

a @n A UNITED STATES PATENT (")EEICE- v.GEORGE w. RRENTIOE, OE PROvIDENcE, RHODE IsLAND.
BUTTON-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 294,504, dated March 4, 1884.
' Application ined December 6,1883. (No modem clare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description yof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved and novel construction of that class of metallic button-fasteners which are composed of a fiat table or plate having downwardly-projecting prongs, one-prong of which is formed with a loop to receive the shank 'of the button, and all of the said prongs being adapted to be passed down through a fabric and clinched upon the under surface thereof to secure the button thereto; and my improvements consist, essentially, in forming the metallic fastener or connection from a blank cut from stock rolled in a peculiar shape, being thick at the center and tapering from thence to a thin edge at each side, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and spe'- ciiically pointed out in the claims. Y
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l rep- 'resents an enlarged perspective view of my shape shown'in cross-section in Fig. 4, the cenedge at each side of the same, as shown intral portion of said stock being of a suitable thickness, and tapering from thence to a thin Figs. 3 and 4. The blank A, cut from said stock, is preferably of the shape shown in Fig; 3, with one prong, a, lat one side and two prongs, b, at the opposite side of the intermediate or central table or plate, c, as shown, although the number and location of the said prongs may be changed or increased or decreased at pleasure, the main object, in either case, being to provide a central table of a greater thickness than that of the prongs which taper froln said central plate out to a thin sharp edge. The complete fastener is formed from the blank A by first bending the prong a into a loop to receive the shank of the button, and
then bending said prong down at right angles to the central table or plate,` c, the opposite prong or prongs, b, being also bent down at right angles to said plate to form the complete fastener, as shown-in Figs. l and 2.
By means of my improved construction I` am enabled to provide a button-fastener which is not only strong and durable, but which can be produced at a much less cost than where each separate fastener has to be manipulated by 'expensive machinery to thin or flatten the lower ends or points of the prongs, as has been the practice heretofore.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is 1. As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described button-fastener, formed from the blank A, having a portion thickened at a central line,.from which the prongs a b are gradually reduced in thickness outward to their extremities, and which are bent at right angles, substantially as and for the purpose specified. p
2. The blank A, formed as described, with a portion thickened at a central line, vfrom which the prongs a b are gradually reduced in thickness outward to their extremities, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature'in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. PRENTICE.
