Description

(NOUMOGGL) E. D. STEELE.
LAOING STUD 0R BUTTON. No. 257,528. 7 Patented May 9,1882.
INVENTOR I Tm N. PETERS, Phommho mphcr. Wahinglun. 5.6.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDIVAR-D D. STEELE, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT.
LACING STUD OR BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,528, dated May 9, 1882,
Application filed January 10, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD I). STEELE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, havc'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lacing Studs or Buttons; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to provide a lacing stud orbutton of a simplified and novel construction, which is adapted to be secured to boots and shoes or to gloves to receive the lacing-string or button-hole, or for such other purposes to which the invention might be applicable; and it consists essentially of a stud formed from a hollow tubular post or eyelet having an intermediate or central shoulder or flange, which divides the said stud into a lower tubular shank to secure the device to the material or fabric, and an upper rounded neck to receive the lacing-string or button-hole, said neck portion havingits upper part spread out to form a head, which is adapted to receive a circular disk or cap, all as will be hereinafter more particularly described, and specifically designated in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved lacing-stud; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section of the same; Fig. 3, a side elevation in partial section as attached to a fabric. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank; Fig. 5, the tubular post or eyelet formed from the same, and Fig. 6 the tubular post or eyelet provided with the central flange or collar.
Similar letters ofreference indicatelike parts in the several figures.
In carrying out my invention the lacingstud is formed from a hollow tubular post or eyelet having a central shoulder or flange, O, which is adapted to rest upon the surface of the material or fabric to which the device is to be attached, said shoulder or flange dividing the stud into a lower split shank, D, to seupon the said neck B. A circular disk or cap,
A, is secured to the spread head or rim of the neck B, to prevent the circular edges of the same from cutting or chafing other articles of dress liable to come in contact therewith, as also to form a smooth and ornamental finish to the stud.
In the construction of my improved lacingstud, the eyeletor tubular post Fis first struck up out of the circular {disk E, as in the usual manner, and the eyelet or post thus formed is placed within a die ofnovel construction, which compresses the metal at the center ofthe said eyelet or post, so as to provide the circular flange or collar. The circular disk or cap A, having no strain brought upon it, may he formed from a thinner and inferior grade of metal from that used in the formation of'the stud proper.
By means of my improvements I am enabled to produce a lacingstud which is light, compact, and durable, and which possesses both in its construction and operation a high de' gree of simplicity, utility, and cheapness, with a ready adaptation to the purpose contemplated. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described lacingstud, formed from a hollow post or eyelet having a central flange or shoulder, 0, all of a single piece of sheet metal, the said flange or shoulder dividing the stud into a lower tubular shank, 1),and an upper rounded neck, B, having aspread. head or rim to receive the circular disk or cap A, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ED\VARD I). STEELE.
