MELLEN BRAY, OF NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 280,788, dated July 10, 1883. Application filed February 16, 1883. (No model.) I
To (all whom it mag concern.-
Be it known that I, MELLEN BRAY, of Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buttons, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in buttons; and it consists in fastening the button to garments or other articles by means of a flanged tubular cutting-rivet inserted through the cloth or other material and forced into the filling material or core of the button, so as to spread and clinch the rivet therein.
Figure 1 of the drawings is an elevation of a piece of a garment with a button secured thereon in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line '00 a; on Fig. 1. Fig.
. 3 is a central longitudinal section of the tubular fastening-rivet.
A is a portion of a garment of cloth or other flexible material. the tubular rivet by which thebutton is secured to the material A.
The button'B is made up of the shell a, the collet b, and the filling or core 0, the shell and collet being made of metal and the core preferably of leather. The colletb is stamped into a concavo-convex shape, with a central conical recess uponits concave side and a correspondingly-shaped projection upon its convex side to serve as a neck for the button when secured upon the goods, the shell and. collet being united at their peripheries in a well-known manner after the core a has been fitted to and placed in the recess of the collet and between the collet and shell, the outer face of the shell B is the button, and C is a being covered with lasting or other flexible material in a well-known manner, if desired, or left uncovered, as shown in the drawings. The core or filling c is made preferably of leather and shaped to fit the recess in the collet, and of a suitable thickness to extend from the bottom of said recess to the inner surface of the shell a, as shown in Fig. 2.
The rivet C has a cutting-edge, (1, formed at the end of its shank by beveling its inner corner, substantially as described in Letters Patent N o. 180, 747 granted tome August 8, 1876. The collet b has punched through its center, and in the center of the recess formed therein, a hole of a diameter to fit the shank of the rivet C, which is forced through the material A and said hole in the collet, and into the core of leather 0, which is of such a hardness asto present sufficient resistance to the beveled inner surface of the tubular shank as to turn said shank outward, expanding or splitting it, and forming a curved clinch within the core or fillingpiece c, as shown in Fig. 2.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
A button composed of the shell a, the recessed collet b, and the leather core 0, in com bination with the rivet 0, having a cuttingedge, (I, driven into and clinched within the core 0, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof Ihave'signed my 'name to this specification inthe presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MELLEN BRAY.
