Lacing Stud.
No. 242,0'64- Patented May 24, I881.
- Fig 5.
ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANKLIN SMITH, JR, OF PRQVIDENOE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE W. PRENTIOE, OF SAME PLACE.
LAClNG-STUD.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 242,064, dated May 24, 1881.
' Application filed March 26,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN A. SMITH, Jr., acitizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of lthode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lacing-Studs for \Vearing-Apparel; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,'and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
1 My present invention has relation to improvements in lacing-studs for wearing-apparel; and it consists, essentially, of a lacingstud formed of a single piece of sheet metal, having one, two, or more prongs arranged at the front and one or more prongs arranged at the rear, said rear prong or prongs being formed of the central part of the neck or body of the.
blank from which the complete device is made, said lacing stud being provided with a head 2 or lacing-hook at one end, all as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a lacing-stud embodying my improvements; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the 0 same; Fig. 3, a plan view of the blank from which the complete device is formed, and Fig..
4 a modification of said blank.
Similar letters of reference occurring on the several figures indicate like parts.
3 5 Referring to the drawings, A represents the blank from which the lacing-stud is constructed, and which, after being cutfrom sheet metal, is shaped-in suitable dies and bent into the form showninrFigs. 1 and 2. The blankA is provided with two prongs, a a, arranged at the front end, and having a parallel space, in, between the two, and with a rear prong, a, which is cut out of the central part of the blank in line with the space or in front. The two front prongs a a are bent at right angles downward 4 5 from the base-plate B, and the rear prong, a, also extends downward at right angles in a parallel plane and in line with the space m, between the two front prongs, as fully shown in Fig. 1. The head or lacing-hook Ois formed 0 at one end of the plate, as shown, and has an intermediate curved neck, D, the side edges of which are suitably rounded or bent over to form a smooth surface for preventing friction on the lacing-strings. In place, however, of the two prongs at the front and one at the rear, I contemplate using a greater or less number of prongs, as may be deemed expedient, the modification shown in Fig. 4 having but one prong at the front and one prong at the rear.
in the operation of attaching my device to wearing-apparel the front prongs penetrate the material in the same plane, and the rear prong penetrates it in a parallel plane in line with the space between the two front prongs, 6 so that when the prongs are bent over and turned back into the under side of the material they all he parallel and flat with the under surface, thereby presenting a neat and smooth finish, which will not chafe or injure the flesh of the wearer.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- The herein-described lacing-stud, consisting of the head or hook portion 0, intermediate neck, D, and base-plate B, which is provided with the front prongs, a a, and with the rear prong, a, cut from the center of said plate, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my Signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANKLIN AUGUSTUS SMITH, JR.
