Description

(No Model.) I 'G. W. PRENTIGE. Combined Button and Pastening.
N05 237,126. I Patented Feb. 1,1881.
.UV' VEATOR SW WQW WITNESSES By M Attorney N. PEIERS, PHDm-LITHOGRAPNER, WASHINGTON, DC.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. PRENTICE, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
COMBINED BUTTON AND FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,126, dated February 1, 1881. Application filed August 2, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. PRENTICE, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Button and Fastening Device; andIdo hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Myinvention relates to improvemen ts in combined buttons and fastening devices; anditconsists, essentially, of a fastening device formed with a triangular-shaped head or shank, an intermediate neck portion, and a connectingplate provided with fastening-prongs bent at right angles thereto, all formed of a sin gle piece of metal, the triangular-shaped head being adapted to receive a button-head which is molded or east thereon, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my complete invention, and Fig. 2 a "ertical longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the fastening device, formed of a single piece of metal and provided with one, two, three, or more fastening-prongs, a, as may be deemed preferable, for attaching the same to wearingapparel, said fastening device being also provided with a-raised shank, b, formed bynbending the central portion of the fastener into a triangular shape, upon which is adapted to be cast or molded the button-head B, the lower part of the triangular-shaped head or shank b forming an intermediate neck portion, which stands at right angles to the connecting-plate, which is provided with the fastening-prongs a, limit at right angles thereto, as fully shown in The combined button and fastener thus constructed is adapted to be placed in the usual setting-instrument and the sharp prongs forced through the material to which the button is to be attached, after passing through which the prongs are turned by the die in the jaws of said instrument and forced up again in the under surface of the material, thereby presenting a smooth surface beneath and firmly securing the button in place.
The advantages of my invention will be readily apparent, inasmuch as the button and fastening form an article complete in itself and ready for adaptation to Wearing-apparel at all times, whereas the ordinary fastening devices and the buttons to be connected therewithare made separately and sold separately, and the shank of the buttons so made is liable to constantly pull out, thereby necessitating the setting of a new button. Another advantage of my improved device consists of the fact that the button thus combined with the fastening-prongs can also be used as a lacing-stud where desired.
I am aware that buttons have heretofore been formed upon fastenin gs for attachment to wearing-apparel, and I do not, therefore, desire to claim such a construction, broadly; but
What I do claim as new and useful is As an improved article of manufacture, a combined button and fastening device for wearingapparel, consisting of the fastening device A, formed with a triangular-shaped head, I), an intermediate neck portion, and a connectingplate provided with fastening-prongs a, bent at right angles thereto, all formed of a single piece of metal, said triangular head I) being adapted to receive the button-head B, which 'is molded or cast thereon, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. PRENTICE.
