UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
GEORGE W. PRENTIOE, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IM PROVEM ENT IN BUTTO N- FASTEN ERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 207,818, dated SeptemberlO, 1878; application filed May 18, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. PRENTIOE, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Attaching Buttons t0 Wearing Apparel; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a button secured to a fabric by my improved connection or fastener; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same in position to be attached to the fabric, and Fig. 3 a section taken on the line a; w of Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference occurring on the several figures indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to improvements in metallic connections or fasteners for attaching buttons to wearing apparel.
It consists of a two-pronged fastener, provided with a loop or staple adapted to receive the shank of the button, and having lancetpoints to insure of the easy penetration and setting of the same in the material to which the button is to be applied, the whole being formed of either triangular, round, or halfround wire, and adapted for operation, as will be hereinafter more'fully described, the object of the invention being to furnish a more economical and simple fastener than those hitherto in use for the same purpose.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the metallic connection or fastener, having tapering prongs B B, thinned to a sharp edge, and provided with the loop or staple O, the whole being formed of either triangular, round, or half-round wire, cut in lengths, bent and swaged in shape by suitable machinery employed for that purpose to produce the completed fastener.
D represents the button, having a shank, E, which is adapted to fit in the loop. or staple of the fastener A, for attachment to the fabric or material.
The fastener thus constructed and provided with the button I) is placed in a suitable setting instrument or tool, and the sharp prongs forced through the material to which the button is to be attached, after passing through which the prongs are bent and forced up again in the under surface of the material, as shown in Fig. 1, thereby presenting a smooth surface beneath, and firmly securing the button in place.
It will be observed that the triangular, round, or half-round loop or staple permits the button to swing freely from side to side, to enable the same to be easily introduced in the button-hole of the other portion of the fabric or material, and also to prevent the shank of the button from pressing into the material and chafing the flesh of the wearer.
I am aware that metallic connections or fasteners have been heretofore constructed with penetrating-prongs, and having a loop or staple to receive the shank of the button; but all of such connections require a large amount of stock or sheet metal, and involve the necessity of costly machinery in their construction, as compared with my present improvement.
I am also aware of the Patent No. 171,349, granted to Moorehouse under date of May 16, 1876, in which a fiat staple-shaped connection having a central loop, and provided with two prongs, is used in connection with an under metallic plate to secure buttons to wearing apparel, and I do not desire, therefore, to claim such a construction separately or in combination.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is-- As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described button-fastener, consisting of the staple-shaped connection A, having two penetrating-prongs, B B,one of which forms a loop, 0, for the reception of the shank E of the button D, and both being thinned to an edge at the points, to enable the same to be readily turned back in the material to which the button is attached, said fastener being formed of round or half-round wire, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I affix my signature in pres ence of two witnesses.
GEO. IV. PRENTIOE.
