V BUTTON FASTENING. No. 257,620. Patented May 9,1882.
vATTORNEY N. PETERS, Flume-Lithographer, wuhin mn. D C
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANKLIN A. SMITH, JR, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE W. PRENTIOE, OF SAME PLACE.
BUTTON-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 257,620, dated May 9, 1882.
Application filed March 6, 18852.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN A. SMITH, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fastenin'gs; and Ido declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the IO art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to provide a button-fastener of a novel and simplified construction; and it consists essentially of a fastening device provided at one end with a downwardly-projectin g prongadapted to receive the shank of the button, and at the opposite end with a fastening-plate having an eyelet or one or more spurs formed from its interior to attach the fastener and button to any desired article of wearing apparel, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically designated in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my complete invention; Fig. 2, a similar view as attached to a button and fab- 0 ric; Fig. 3, the blank from which my device is formed. Fig. 4 represents the manner of cutting said blanks witnout waste of the material employed; Fig. 5, a modification of my device, and Fig. 6 the blank from which said modifi- 3 5 cation is formed.
Similar letters of reference occurring on the several figures indicate like parts.
In carrying out my invention the complete .device is formed from the blank A, which is 0 composed of a suitable disk or plate, B, terminating in a projecting prong, U, at one side thereof, as shown. The central part of the said disk or plate may be either provided with one or more spurs, a, or with an eyelet, b, by 4 5 punching or cutting the same from the central portion of said disk or plate in a manner well (No model known. The projecting prongC is preferably formed with an eye or loop, 0, as shown in Fig.
1; but the said eye or loop may be dispensed with and the prong bentdown at right angles to the plate B, as shown in Fig.
In the operation of my improved device the shank of the button D is slipped over the prong O, and by means of a suitable setting-instrument the device as connected to said button is firmly secured to any desired fabric or material in a manner well known.
By means of my improvements the fastening device is rigidly held in place upon the fabric withoutliability of workinglooseor tear- 6o ing the fabric, yet at the same time allowing the free play or action of the button.
My improved device is also produced with but little waste of the material employed in its construction, and combines in its eonstruction and operation a greater degree of strength and utility than other devices usedfora similar purpose.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is-- *1. As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described button-fastener, consisting of the disk or plate B, provided with one or more depending attachin g projections, a 1), formed from the central portion thereof, and having a prong, G, to receive the shank of a button and to penetrate the material to which the button is secured, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The herein-described blank for buttonfasteners, consisting of the disk or plate B, provided with one or more attaching projections, or 1), formed from thecentral portion thereof, and with an integral laterally-projecting prong, C, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANKLIN A. SMITH, JR.
