Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 89,035, dated April 3, 1877; application filed August 29, 1876.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SIMON A. HAZELTON, of Linden, Genesee county, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fastenings, of which the following is a specification:

This invention relates to that class of buttons in which the shank of the button is passed through the material or garment to which it is to be affixed, and fastened by a clasping device, which prevents the withdrawal of the shank; and in the present instance it consists in attaching to the usual head of the button a shank provided with an annular slot at or near its point, and of a fasteningshield, convex on one face and concave on the other, provided with a peculiarlyshaped slot, and with a tongue or fastener projecting from its rear face, the several parts being used in combination, in the manner as will hereinafter be fully pointed out and described.

In the drawings, which form an essential part of this specification, Figure l is a plan view, in reverse, of a button and fastening inwhich is fully embodied my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the button proper and its slotted shank. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the fastening device. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation thereof, and Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are modifications of the same.

Similar letters of reference in the various figures will point out and locate corresponding parts.

In carrying out my invention, I make use of a metallic button-head, a, oonstructedby any of the ordinary mechanical means, the upper face thereof being ornamented in any desired manner.

To the rear face of the button-head I attach a post or shank, b, which projects a suitable distance therefrom, and is provided with an annular slot, 0, formed near its end. The location of this slot or groove may be varied according to the style of button, and the purposes for which is to be used.

The method of attaching this post or shank to the button-head is a simple mechanical device in common use, and therefore calls for no detailed description herein.

d represents the fastening-shield, which is constructed by stamping by means of suitable dies, from sheet metal of proper thick- 6 ness for the purpose.

In shape, I prefer the form of an elongated oval, as shown in Fig. 3, though it may be circular, as in Fig. 6.. This shield is preferably convex on its rear face, and concave on its front face, as shown in Fig. 4, or it may be flat on both faces, as in Fig. 5, or of the shape in Fig. 7.

In this latter case it may be preferable, as the edges of the fastening-shield will then hug more closely to the fabric when it is attached in place.

0 is a tongue projecting from one face of the shield d, and is cut therefrom, as shown in Figs. 3 to 6, its rear end being a part of the shield. The space in the shield from which itis struck up is elongated beyond the end of the tongue, as plainly shown atf in Figs. 3 and 6, a distance equaling one-half of the diameter of the post I) in the slot 0 attached to the head of the button, and conforming to the shape thereof, thus forming a seat to receive the said slotted! shank b, when inserted therein. The slot f in the fastening-shield d, at its rear, is somewhat wider than the post or shank b of the button-head, and narrowed toward its front, while the tongue 6 is curved above it. It is therefore plainly seen that the post or shank b will readily enter therein, and that it will then readily slide to the front of the slot f, the slot 0 at once fitting itself to the shield d. The tongue 0 is then bent down flat, and its point will enter into the slot 0, thus firmly holding it in its position.

What I claim isl. The combination of the button a, provided with slotted shank b, and the curved fastening-shield d, having elongated slot f and tongue 0, arranged, applied, and operating as and for the purposes as herein shown and set forth.

2. The fastening-shield d, concave on one face and convex on the other, provided with elongated slot f and tongue e, as and for the purposes herein set forth and. described.
