UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
IRVING G. PLATT, OF \VATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE PATENT BUTTON COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BUTTON AND BUTTON-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 329,337, dated October 27, 1885.
Application filed June 19, 1885. Serial No. 169,157.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRVING G. PLATT, of Waterbury, county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buttons and Button-Fastenings; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention is in the nature of an improvement in buttons; and the invention consists in a button combined with a fastening device, in the manner hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of button attached to fabric by rivet flattened on one side only; Fig. 2, aside View of same, partly in section. Fig. 3 shows a fastener with one side only of its shank flattened and cross-section of same. Fig. 4 is a plan view of button attached to fabric by fastener flattened on both sides; Fig. 5, a side view of same, partly in section. Fig. 6 shows a fastener flattened on both sides and a cross-section of same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
This invention has for its object the simplifying, cheapening, and strengthening the fast ening of buttons to garments, &c., as will appear fully and at large in the following specification and drawings, wherein A represents the shell of a button made of one or two pieces of inetal, and having a depression, a, in the center of the hub b, and also a central perforation, c. This practically completes the button-shell, and it in no wise differs from the common and well-known shells of buttons designed to have metallic fastenings.
The fastener G of my button is provided with a head, d, at one end, from which its shank e gradually tapers to a point, f. In the (No model.)
construction of this shank lies the principal feature of my invention, for, as will be seen from the drawings, the shank is flattened either on one or both sides, as at g. If flattened on one side only, the point of the shank is slightly bent Over, as in Fig. 3, in the direction of the flat side of the shank. If, however, the shank is flattened on two sides, the bend is omitted. The result of this flattening is as follows: It the fastener with its shank flattened on one side is used, by reason of its sharp point and edges formed by its flattened sides, it is easily thrust through the fabric of the garment and through the perforation in the shell of the button. WVith a suitable tool its sharpened end is upset to form a head, h, within the depression a, effectually confining the fabric of the garment between the inner surface of the head of the fastener and the lower end of the hub of the button. Now, since the shank of the fastener is flattened on one side and its point slightly bent, as described, the end of the fastener in the process of upsetting curls over, as in Fig. 2. \Vhen, however, the fastener with two of its sides flattened is used, as in Fig. 5, there is no tendency on the part of the shank to turn or upset more on one side than on the other; hence the point of the fastener is crowded down or turned over evenly all around and forms the symmetrical head shown in Fig. 5.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A button-shell with a central depression, hub, and perforation, combined with a fastening device, C, provided with a head, d, and with its shank pointed and flattened, as and for the purpose described.
IRVING G. PLATT.
