BUTTON-FASTENER.
QSPECIPICATION forming part of Letters P atent No. 335,393, dated February 2, 1886.
Application filed May 19, 1885. Serial No. 166,016. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD D. STEELE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accon'ipanying drawings, and to theletters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My present invention has for its object to provide a metallic buttonfastener of a novel, simplified, and inexpensive construction, one that will permit of the easy connection of the button thereto and insure the smooth and even clinching of the fastening-prongs upon the back part of the material to which it may be attached, as also to provide a secure and reliable bearing upon the upper surface of said material; and my improvements consist, essentially, of a one-piece metallic fastener composed of a head-bar or table having preferably three prongs integral therewith and projecting substantially in the same direction from one side or edge thereof, the central or intermediate prong being longer than the others for the formation of a loop thereon to receive the shank of a button, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically designated in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure .1 represents the metallic blank from which my improved fastener is constructed; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the complete fastener, and Fig. 8 a side view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
In carrying out my invention, the metallic blank A is cut from a sheet of suitable metal, and is composed, essentially, of a head-bar, a, having three or more prongs, b, projecting from one side or edge thereof in substantially the same direction, each of said prongs being preferably beveled to a sharp point, as shown, for the ready penetration of the material to which the fastener may be attached, as well as to insure the regular and even clinching of the prongs upon the back portion thereof to provide a smooth and even surface.
The central or intermediate prong is made longer than the side ones, so as to provide a sufficient length to form the loop 0 for the reception of the shank of the button, said prong being forced rearwardly from the head-bar to form said loop, as well as to provide a suitable space between the respective prongs. \Vhen said loop 0 is formed by the rearwardly crowding ofthe central prong, all of the prongs are of the same general length, and are at regular and even distances apart to permit of the proper setting of the metallic fastener, in the operation of which the central prong clinches in the space between the side prongs in a manner well known. The lower edge of the head-bar a forms abearing, which is adapted to securely rest upon the upper surface of the fabric or material to which the fastener may be applied, said fabric or material being rigidly held between said head-bar and the clinched ends of the prongs to allow the shank of the button to have a free movement within the loop 0 of the fastener.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and useful 1. A metallic button-fastener composed of a head bar or table, a, and three or more prongs, b, projecting from said table in the same general direction, the central or intermediate prong being longer than the others and bent backward from said table to form the eye or loop 0, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. A button-fastener composed of a headbar and three or more prongs integral therewith projecting in the same direction from one side or edge thereof, and the central or intermediate prong being of an increased length to provide an eye or loop, 0, thereon, substantially as described.
The metallic blank A, composed of the head-bar or table a and prongs b, integral therewith and projecting in the same direction, the central or intermediate prong being of an increased length to that of the side prongs, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
