BLANK FOR BUTTON-FASTENERS.

Be it known that I, PARKER H. SWEET, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at WVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Blank for Button-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the manufacture of that class of button-fasteners which are provided with a loop to receive the shank of the button, and with two or more downwardly projecting prongs which are adapted to be passed through the fabric or material and clinched upon the lower surface thereof, to secure the button in place; and my improvements consist in forming said fasteners from metallic blanks of peculiar and novel construction, which are cut from the stock employed without the smallest waste, whereby the complete fasteners can be produced at a slight cost, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically designated in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the blank from which the fastener is formed; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the complete fastener; Fig. 3, the fastener as applied to a button and fabric; Fig. 4, a top plan View showing the manner in which theblanks are out without waste of the material, and Fig. 5 a modified .form of fastener produced from said blanks.

In carrying out my invention, the blanks A are preferably cut from a sheet of metal having beveled edges, each of said blanks being composed of a sharp-pointed prong, a, projecting in one direction, and a larger split prong, b, projecting in an opposite direction, as shown. These blanks are cut with the smaller prongs resting side by side, as fully shownin Fig. 4, thereby utilizing the entire stock without waste. In forming the complete fastener from the blank A the single prong, a, is first bent up to form a loop or neck, a, for the reception of the shank of the button, and then bent downwardly, as shown. Thelarger prong, b, which is split in the center for a portion of its length, is then bent downward, leaving a central portion or table, d, which is adapted to rest upon the surface of the fabric or material to which the fastener is to be applied. The split prong bis then spread apart so as to provide the fastener with two sharp-pointed prongs at the front and one at the rear, and all being of a corresponding size and shape, as fully shown in Fig. 2. The blank A may also be bent into the form of fastener shown at Fig. 5, and the loop or neck a may be dispensed with in either of the forms of fastener without departing from the spirit of my invention.
The button and fastener, being connected together, is adapted to be applied to a fabric or material by means of a suitable setting-instrument, -the prongs of the fastener being forced through the fabric and then clinched upon the lower surface thereof in a manner well known.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is The blank A, formed, as described, with the smaller prong, a, projecting in one direction, and the larger prong, b, projecting in an opposite direction, the said prong I) being split a portion of its length, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
