UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES F. THAYER, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
BUTTON-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,970, dated December 22, 1885.
Application filed September 30, 1885. Serial No. 178,607. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES F.THAYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to button -fasteners; and it consists, essentially, of a single piece of wire bent to form a base or table, from which extends a double stem or post, the ends thereof terminating in a forked or duplex atcaching-hook.
The object of this improvement is to produce a fastener for buttons which is both strong and inexpensive,as well as being adapted to be readily attached, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth and claimed, said invention being an improvement upon the button-fasteners described and claimed in my two pending applications for United States Letters Patent filed June 24, 1885, and August 6, 1885, and numbered 169,610 and 173,698, respective] In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 represents, enlarged, a perspective View of the fastener as formed from a piece of wire. Fig. 2 is a front View of the same in position in the fabric, showing the eye of the button passed over the forked attaching-hooks. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the button completely attached to the fabric, the same being effected by bending the end portions of the hooks rearwardly and downwardly, thereby securely retaining the button in position. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 represent perspective views of the fastener, wherein the base is bent or formed at right angles to the double stem; and Fig. 7 representsin cross-section various forms of wire adapted to be used in the manufacture of the fasteners.
The construction and application of the fastener hereinafter claimed may be described substantially as follows:
A, Fig. 1, again referring to the drawings,
designates the fastener as a whole, the same consisting of a piece of wire bent to form the base a, from which extends upwardly the central double stem or post, 0, each end thereof terminating in the overhanging loop orhook 6.. By means of this use of wire a material saving is effected in the cost of the fasteners as compared with those formed from sheet metal.
The wire employed may be round, halfround, square, &c., in its cross-section, as indicated in Fig. 7.
The base of the fastener may be bent or formed so as to lie in a plane at right angles to the double stem 0 without departing from the spirit of the invention, as represented in Figs. 4., 5, and 6.
The operation of attaching a button, B, to the fabric or material F by means of my improved wire fastening may be described as follows: The said fabric is first punctured or perforated and the forked hooks d inserted therein. The eye of the button isth'en passed over the points ofsaid hooks, as shown in Fig. 2, when, finally, the end portions ofthe duplex hooks are bent rearwardly and downwardly by suitable means for the purpose of partially encircling the button-eye, thus securing the button to the fabric. as fully shown in Fig. 3.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. As an improved article of manufacture, the button -fastener hereinbefore described, consisting of .a piece of Wire bent to form a base or table, from which extends at right angles therewith the double post or stem having upper or free ends terminating in overhanging hooks d, substantially as shown and set forth.
2. The button-fastener A, hereinbefore described, made from wire bent to form the base or table a, and the double stem or post a, having the overhanging forked or duplex attaching-hooks d 011 its end, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES F. THAYER.
Witnesses CHARLES GREENE, GEO. H. REMINGTON.
