UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
GEORGE W. PRENTIOE, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
BUTTON- FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,081, dated January 1, 1884.
I Application filed November 2, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatv I, GEORGE W. PRENTIOE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to provide an efficient, simplified, and inexpensive button fastener or connection, which relates to that class of button-fasteners which are adapted to be readily attached to buttons and fabrics and as readily detached therefrom without the aid of a setting-instrument; and my invention consists, essentially, of a fastener having two side wings or loops, which are provided with an elongated tongue, which is bent upward and over the central part of said .wings to form a loop to receive the shank of the button, and then bent under and beneath the central part of said wings, and projecting at right angles thereto to form a base or table in connection with said side wings, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically designated in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my invention; Fig. 2, a side View of the same as attached to a button and fabric; Fig. 3, a rear ,view of the same, and Fig. 4 a bottom plan view.
Similar letters of reference occurring on the several figures indicate like parts.
In carrying out my invention the fastener is preferably formed from a short length of wire, which is first bent together at the center to form the elongated tongue a, the projecting ends of the wire at the opposite end being then bent at right angles to said tongue to form the side wings or loops, b, as shown. The elongated tongue a is then bent upward and over the central portion of and betweenthe two side wings, b, to form a springloop, c, to receive the shank of the button,
and again bent down iiatwise under and beneath the central portion of and between the two side wings, b, leaving the end of thetongue projecting a short distance from and at right angles to said wings. The projecting end of the tongue a is then flattened out to a thin point, which is curved upwardly, as shown, and the ends of the side wings or loops,` b, are also given ya slight curve upward, so that when the device is attached to a button and fabric the said side wings, b, and the end of the tongue a form a smooth and even base or table upon the under surface of the fabric.
In the operation of attaching a button to a fabric or other material, aslot or opening is made through said fabric, and the shank of the button then pushed down through the same until the loop of the shank projects below the lower surface of the fabric. The tongue a of the fastener is then passed through said shank and the fastener turned around until the shank of the button rests in the spring-loop c. ward until the ends of the side wings, b, and the end of the tongue a ts closely up against the, lower surface of the fabric to secure an even and smooth finish. The action of the spring-loop c, which spreads outwardly atthe top when secured in place, serves to hold the fastener firmly to the fabric, and does not allow the base to drop down and chafe the flesh of the wearer.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and useful- As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described button-fastener, consisting of the side wings or loops, b, having the elongated tongue a, which is bent around over and beneath the central portion between the side wings to form a spring-loop, c, and projecting end, which serves, in connection with said side wings, to form a smooth base or table, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses:
GEORGEY w. PEENTioE.
Witnesses:
CHARLES GREENE, F. A. SMITH, .I r.
