BUTTON-FASTENING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,096, dated January 31, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

\ Be it known that I, GEORGE W. PnENTIoE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvemen ts in Button-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompan yin g drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.

My invention has for its object to provide an improved fastening device for attaching buttons to wearing-apparel; and it consists essentially ofa retaining base or plate provided with an upwardly-projectin g prong or prongs formed from the central portion of said plate, and adapted to project through the material to which the device is to be attached and to pass through the eye or shank of the button, and coiled or bent around upon the same by a suitable setting-instruinent, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed outin the claim.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an enlarged perspective view of my completefastener; Fig.2, a similar view as applied to the shank of a button; Fig. 3, a side elevation as attached to a button and fabric; Fig. 4, the blank from which the fastener is formed, and Fig. 5 a modified form of said blank.

A represents the oval or other suitablyshaped blank from which is formed my complete fastener, and which-is provided with the \l-shaped prong B, )referably cut from the central portion of said blank and bent upatright angles thereto, as fully shown in Fig.1. Small spurs a are also formed upon the sides orcnds of the blank A; or holes may be punched therein in such a manner as to provide penetratingpoints, which are clinched in the fabric to securely attach the plate or base to thevunder side of the same, and thereby prevent its being bent at the edges or being turned when in use. The blank A may, however, be formed without the penetrating-points without departin g from the spirit of my invention.

The fastening device constructed as described is attached to the button and article of wearing-apparel by means of a suitable setting-instrument, which forces the spurs a up into the fabric and clinches the same therein, and also forces the prong B up through the fabric or material, and by means of a die in the upper jaw ofthe setting-instrument through the eye or shank b of the button 0, and coils or bends the end of the prong around in the same, as fully shown in Figs. 2 and 3. In place, however, ofthe single prong B, the blank or plate A may be provided with two prongs,

I), as shown in Fig. 5, which are adapted to be forced up through the fabric, and then through the eye or shank of the button on opposite sides to each other, and coiled down upon or into the fabric.

The prongs may be of any suitable shape, and are preferably slightly beveled at their points to more readily enable them to follow the contour of the die used in attaching the,

same to the shanks of the buttons.

By means of myimprovements I am enabled to produce a button-fastener of a most simple and efficient character, the base or plate of which will not shift or turn with the button or the edges of the same bend or lap over, but which will be closely held to the under surface of the fabric or material to which it may be attached, presenting a smooth surface which will not chafe or rub the flesh of the wearer.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described fastening device for attaching buttons to wearing-apparel, consisting of the base or plate A, provided with the upwardly-extending prong B, formed from the central part of said plate and bent at right angles thereto, and with the spurs it upon each side of the plate and integral therewith, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
