SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,881, dated April 21, 1891.

To all whom it may concern:

Be itknown that I, HENRY ADOLPH BERGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Neckties, Gloves, &c., of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an adjustable fastening, looking, or holding device particularly designed for neckties, scarfs, and similar articles. My said invention is also applicable to and will be found useful for many other purposes-such, for instance, as gloves,

corsets, carriage-curtains, or other articles in which two flaps are to be removably secured together.

Primarily the object of my invention is to produce such a fastening device in a simple and inexpensive manner, a further object being to make the device capable of receiving and holding button-heads and like projections of varying sizes.

To this end my invention consists in a fastening device of substantially oblong form, comprising an enlarged concave lower portion terminating in a flexible tongue, a contracted convex upper portion or rim, and a space between said rim and tongue.

My invention also includes the contraction or indentation of the lower portion of said convex rim, whereby the button-head or projection will have to be forced into the space between the tongue or rim against the tension of the tongue, and hence will be normally held in said space by the pressure of said tongue.

In the accompanying drawings, in the several figures of which like parts are desig nated by similar letters of reference, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of a modification thereof.

As shown in the drawings, A designates the body of my fastener, which, as stated, is of substantially oblong form. The lower portion B is enlarged and centrally concaved or depressed and terminates in a tongue C. (Shown by full lines in Figs. 2 and 3 and partially full and partially dotted lines in Fig. 1.) The upper portion E is of convexed rim shape, having indented or contracted portions D 1) near the lower portions thereof. The tongue (1, being a projection of the central concavity of the enlarged portion B, forms, with the rim of the convex portion E, a space H between said tongue and rim.

As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, my fastening device is provided with prongs F, by means of which it may be secured to the necktie, scarf, curtain-flap, or other article upon which itis employed. In use the button-head or similar projection KL is inserted into the concavity of the enlarged portion B, and then the device is moved downwardly or the buttonhead upwardly until it passes the contracted portions D D of the convex rim and enters the space H, where it is held by the normal pressure exerted against it by the tongue G. As shown, this button comprises a buttonhead L, having a shank M, terminating in a tongue K; but any other form of button suitable for the purpose may be used.

In the modification shown in Fig. 3 the said fastening device is shown as combined with and formed in and out of a single piece G of thin metal, which forms the necktie-supporting frame, and having a series of openings a therein, by means of which the necktie may be sewed or otherwise attached to the frame.

Preferably I prefer to form my fastening device of light thin sheet metal whether it is made as a separate structure or out of and part of the necktie-supporting frame, for the reason that the fastening device can be cheaply and quickly formed out of metal by one punching and one stamping operation. I do not, however, wish to limit myself to sheet metal, as pasteboard, celluloid, or other material may be used.

\Vhatlclaim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A fastening device comprising an enlarged lower portion centrally concave and terminating in a flexible tongue, a contracted convex upper portion or rim, the lower edges of which are indented or contracted, and a space between said tongue and rim, substantially as described.
