Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, SAMUEL MARKHAM BRYDGES, a subject of the Dominion of Canada, residing at the city of Nelson, in the county of Kootenay and Province of British Columbia, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar-Buttons, of which the iollowing'is aspecification.
My present invention relates to improvements in collar buttons and the object of the invention is to produce a button which will possess all the requisites of strength anddurability and which will be simple in construction and one which may be easily passed through the button hole.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure l is a front view of the button ready for insertion in the button hole. Fig. 2 is a side view partly in section after insertion. Fig. 3 is a side view ready for insertion. Fig. 4 is a sectional view. Fig. 5 shows a piece of metal cut to form the shank and the back of the base of the button.
As shown in the drawings 1 is the base of the button preferably formed of the circular piece of metal 2, having its edges curved over the endportions 4, 4, of the shank portion 3, said shank being formed, as shown in Fig. 5, of a single piece of metal having a central oblong opening 5 and the enlarged end portions 4, l. The portion 3 is bent at 6 upon itself and the portions 4, l, are bent at right angles to the portion 3 and the ends of the piece 2 are curved over these portions 4 as above explained. Thus theshank 3 is firmly secured to the base and the opening 5 forms a recessG to receive the head 7. This head 7 is pivoted at each side to the projecting portions 3 of the shank on each side of the recess 6. As the head is rotatable on its pivots it will be seen that it may assume a posi tion at right angles to the shank as shown in Fig. 2, thus holding the button in the button hole or it may be raised so as to be in vertical alinement with the shank as shown in Fig. 3 whereby the button is easily inserted in the button hole. In order to prevent the head from turning when being inserted I provide a bolt 7 which passes up through the base and shank and having its end, in its operative position, projecting into the recess 6, a small recess 8 being formed in each end of the head with which the said end engages to hold the head upright. 9 is the head of the bolt and 10 is a projection thereon, said head and projection lying on each side of the base of the button and allowing a limited movement of the bolt 7, the shank being cut away at 9 to leave a space for the projection.
1t w1ll now be seen that as the operator grasps the button in his fingers his. thumb will press against the head of the bolt which forces the other end of said bolt into one of the recesses of the head which has been turned into upright position. The head and shank are then passed through the button holes, the head being held against turning by the bolt and then the bolt is released and the head given a quarter turn to hold the button in place. It will be seen that I provide a collar button having a shank consisting of a piece of doubled material having a forked end and having portions extending laterally at right angles to the body of the shank in opposite directions.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A collar" button consisting of a piece of material having a forked end and having portions extending laterally at right angles to the body of the shank, said shank having openings adjacent the laterally extending portions, a second piece of material fitting over said laterally extending portions and forming the base, an oval shaped head pivoted in the forked end of the shank and lying in the same plane with the shank when ready for inserting in the button hole, said head having a recess in each end thereof, a bolt passing through the base and shank adapted to engage with either recess in the head, a head on the bolt engaging with the outer face of the base and a projection on the bolt extending into the opening adjacent the base. said head and projection acting as stops to limit the movement of the bolt.
