CUFF BUTTON. No. 552,154. Patented Dec. 31, 189-5.
WITNESSES: INVENTOR- A TTOHNE Y S.
AN BREW B GRAHAMJHOTQ LWMQWASHINGIOILD C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM G. SUTTON, OF WINSTON, NORTH CAROLINA.
CUFF-BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,154, dated December 31, 1895. Application filed April 30, 1895. Serial No. 547,677. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. SUTTON, of Winston, in the county of Forsyth and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and Improved Ouif-Button, of which the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved cuff-button arranged to button a cuff and to hold the latter always in the same position relative to the coat-sleeve or other part of the wearers dress.
The invention consists of abutton provided with a clamping device adapted to engage the coat-sleeve.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement as applied, parts being in section. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the improvement, and Fig. 3 is an end view of the same.
The improved cuff-button is provided with a suitable base A, from which extends a shank B, engaging at its upper end a pivot 0 held in the head D of the button. From the upper end of the shank B extends sidewise an arm E formed by an upwardly-extending lug E adapted to engage part of the dress, preferably the sleeve, against a series of serrations or teeth D formed on the bottom of the head D, as is plainly illustrated in the drawings. It will be seen that by this arrangement the cuff-button can be securely attached to the coat-sleeve or other part of the wearers dress to hold the cuff always in the same position relative to the coat-sleeve.
On the shankB is arranged a spring F, engaging with its free end a projection of the head D, so as to hold the lug E of the clamp. ing-arm E firmly in engagement with the coatsleeve. Now it will be seen that by the arrangement described the button can be readily used for buttoning the cuffs in the usual manner, and then when the cuff is placed in position on the wearers arm the operator presses the forward end of the head D, so as to cause the latter to swing upward at the part carrying the serrations D to form an opening between the said serrations and the lug E to pass the edge of the coat-sleeve between the open parts, as indicated in Fig. 1, after which the operator releases the press ure on the head D to permit the spring F to close the clamping-lug E firmly against the coat-sleeve to press the latter against the serrations D, thus holding the cuff-button to the coat-sleeve.
It will be seen that the device is very simple and durable in construction, can be readily used for buttoning the ends and for holding the latter always in the desired position relative to the coat-sleeve without exposing part of the clamping device or hiding the head of the button.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a cuff button, the base piece, the shank extended therefrom, the head pivotally connected to the shank, an arm extended laterally from the upper portion of the shank and having its end turned at an angle to the main portion, and the spring extended from the shank to an engagement with the head, substantially as specified.
2. Inacuffbutton, the base piece, the shank projected therefrom and having the laterally extended arm, the end of said arm being turned at substantially right angles to the main portion, the head pivoted to theshank and having the serrations, and the spring extended from the shank to an engagement with the head.
WVILIJIAM G. SUTTON.
