Description

U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUOIEN A. STILLWAGON, OF GREENOASTLE, INDIANA.
CUFF-ADJUSTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,485, dated December 29, 1885.
Application filed April 28, 1885. Serial No. 163,767. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LUOIEN A. STILLWAGON, of Greencastle, in the county of Putnam and State of Indiana, have invented a new and improved Cuff-Adjuster, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 isa side elevation of my improved cuff-adjuster shown in use, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient device for holding cuffs in any desired position on the wrists, and which will admit of readily attaching and detaching the cuff without the trouble and vexation attending the use of cuff-buttons.
My invention consists in a bar provided at one end with a button adapted to enter the button-holes of the cuff, and having at the opposite end a pivoted spring-acted clamp for receiving the edge of the shirt-sleeve. The flat metallic bar A, forming the body of the adjuster, is bent backward or returned upon itself at a, then bent outward at right angles, forming the shank b. It is then bent forward parallel to itself and provided with a circular end, which forms the button B.
To the opposite end of the bar A is pivoted a clamp, O, by means of a rivet or eyelet, c. The clamp O is formed of a plate, d, having ears 6 bent upward at right angles at opposite edges thereof, between which is pivoted a movable jaw, f, having a thumb-piece, g, for opening the jaws to admit the fabric and for turning the jaw on its pivot.
To render the joint between the clamp O and the bar Asecure, I have cut a tongue from the center of the plate d, which is bent over the end of the bar A, and through which the eyelet or rivet 0 passes. A spiral spring, h, surrounding the wire 13, has its ends prolonged so that one end rests upon the tongue 5 of the plate d,while the other end rests against the under surface of the thumb-piece g, and
the cuff from the inside of the cuff, the bar A lying along the inner surface of the cuff and the button B being on the outside of the cuff. After the cuff is placed on the wrist the clamp G is made to clasp theedge of the sleeve, as shown in Fig. 1.
The clamp 0, being pivoted to the bar A, admits of using the cuff-adjuster on the left or right arm, as the clamp may be turned to the right or left, as circumstances may require. The part of the bar A returned upon itself forms a lever, which assists materially in removing the button B from the cuff, and prevents the shank from pushing through the button-hole of the cuff.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a cuff-adjuster, the bar A, having a shank at one end, a button on said shank, and 70 an extension below the button approximately in the plane of the said bar, the said extension forming a lever to assist in removing the 7 button from the cuff, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the bar A, provided with a button, B, of a spring-acted clamp, G, pivoted thereto, and capable of turning, so as to form a right or left hand adj uster, as herein specified.
3. In a cuff-adjuster, a pivoted joint formed by a tongue taken from the plate d and bent over the end of the bar A, and an eyelet or rivet, c, passing through the tongue, the bar A, and the plate d, as herein described.
LUOIEN A. STILLWVAGON.
