J. J. HALLAHAN.
SGARF CLASP.
No. 483,783. Patented Oct. 4, 1892.
WITNESSES: MENTOR {/flflfl WM By [M ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES J. I-IALLAHAN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SCARF-CLASP.
$PECIFICATION forming part of Letters l atent No. 483,783, dated October 4, 1892.
Application filed June 27, 1892. Serial No. 438,075- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES J. HALLAHAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn,in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scarf-Clasps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates especially to that class of scarf-clasps which are designed to be applied to the rear and outside of the scarf head-piece for securing the free end of the neckband without drawing it through the head-piece.
The essential features of my invention are hereinafter fully described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure I represents a side View of the clasp in position on the scarf. Fig. II represents a perspective view thereof detached and formed with a spring-tongue. Fig. III represents a like View thereof with a roughened surface. Fig. IV represents an end view thereof. Fig. V represents a like view thereof with a contractile spring.
The letter (1. indicates a piece of elastic sheet metal-such as brass-composing the body of the clamp. This sheet-metal piece a is bent approximately into the shape of the letter U, with the efiect of forming two spring-jaws b c, of a nature to clasp the scarf -neckband 02 when the latter is laid between the jaws, as indicated in Fig. I. On the upper and lower edges of the jaw c are prongs f, whereby the clasp is adapted to be fastened to the desired. part of the scarf--namely, by inserting and clinching the prongs therein; or in lieu of these prongs the said jaw may have holes for permitting it to be sewed to the scarf.
The letter 6 indicates a lever, which is pivoted at the junction of the jaws b c, as at e, in such a manner as to be capable of swinging on and off the jaws for alternately compressing and releasing the same. This lever c may have one or two members for engaging either or both jaws b c, and in order to facilitate the adjustment of the lever it may be provided with a knob at its free end or ends, as shown. The purpose of the lever e is to lock the jaws b 0 upon the neckband cl.
In order to facilitate the introduction of the neckband cl between the jaws b c, the edges thereof may be flared, as shown, and to increase the holding efiect of the jaws either or both may be formed with a spring-tongue 0 for engagement with the locking-lever e, as indicated in Fig. II, or either or both jaws may be roughened, as indicated in Fig. III.
In the example shown in Fig. V a spring 3 is arranged between the j awsb c to act thereon with tendency to contract or close the same, and when this spring is used the sheet-metal piece may be jointed at the junction of the aws.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A clasp for a neckscarf, consisting of a piece of elastic sheet metal which is bent into a substantially U shape to form spring-jaws, one adapted to be fastened to the scarf byone of said jaws, in combination with a locking device for the jaws, substantially as shown and described.
2. A clasp for a neckscarf, consisting of a piece of elastic sheet metal bent into a substantially U shape to form spring-jaws and adapted to be fastened to the scarf by one of said jaws, in combination with a locking-lever pivoted at the junction of the jaws and constructed to engage ajaw, substantially as shown and described.
