Be it known that'I, HENRY HEATH, ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented anew and usefulV Improvement in Retainers for Neckties; andI Yd o hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in retainers for neckties.

lt consists ina retaining device for neckties, constructed of a stiffening-piece of card-board orits equivalent, fitted with awire which, being doubled upon itself in the middle, is secured to one side of the stiffening-piece by an eyelet engaging its loop, while its ends, eX- tending tothe edge of the piece, are so bent and folded over said edge as to lbe steadied thereby and project therefrom over the opposite face of the piece in position, when the stiffening-piece is properlyT secured in the bow and the bow is made fast upon the neck, to serve to engage the collar-button, and thus prevent the bow from working upward out of place. 1

The 5o wire retaining device B thus formed is attached to the stiffening-piece A by inserting the latter into the bendv of the wire, so that its middle eye, c, shall be upon vthe rear, and its prongs e 'e upon the front,'side of the 5 5 stiffening-pieca, and it is secured thereto by means of an eyelet or tubular rivet, E, inserted through the eye c, and through an aperture in the piece A and upset therein, so as to firmly clamp the wire B upon said piece. 6o The portion of the wire including the eye is preferably flattened, to make a neater thereof against the piece A. The engagement of the bend d of the wire with the edge of the piece A serves to prevent the wire from working loose or becoming displaced,

My invention differs from all others in that the retainer is constructed of a stiffening-piece to fit in the bow of the tie, combined with a 9o wire so bent as that being secured to the stiffening-piece on one side thereof it shall bend over the edge of said piece and project therefrom on the opposite side in form to embrace the collar-button between two upwardly-projecting arms.
