Description

F. HOVEY.
NECK-TIE HOLDER.
'110.187,858. Patented Feb.27, 1877.
J' Mmmm@ N Mmmm:
UNITE-D STATES PATENT @Prion FRANCIS HOVEY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN NECK-TIE HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,858, dated February 27, 1877 application led January 26, 1877.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS HOVEY, of New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in N eck-Tie Supporter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a metallic fastening for neck-ties and scarfs, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, which fully illustrates my invention, Figure 1 is a rear view of a neck-tie embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the shield and fastening. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the fastening.
A represents an ordinary neck-tie attached to a shield, B, and C is the fastening or supporter for the same. This fastening is struck up or otherwise made of a sin gle piece of sheet metal, and its lower end bent upward, as shown at a, and on the sides of this turnedup part are points or flanges bb, which are passed through the shield B, or through the material to be connected with the collar-button, and clinched on the same, making the fastening absolutely safe, and very strong, while it is accomplished with but little effort and expense. The body of the fastening C is provided with a circular opening, d, which is placed over the head of the collar-button, and
the natural downward action of the fastening carries the shank of the collar-button into a notch, for the same, which notch extends from the orifice d, through which the head of the button has passed. The ends of the scarf,
tie, or shield are then placed under the collar and prevented byit from movingupward, while the fastening, resting on the shank of the button, prevents the tie from escaping by a downward movement.
It is impossible to dislodge the tie before taking out its corners from under the collar and bringing the orifice d opposite the buttonhead, when it can be taken off by the simplest movement.
rIhe position of the tie and fastening is further secured by the action of the body of the fastening through which the collar-button head passes, which part projects from the turnedup portion a, this latter portion forming a spring, whose action is parallel to the face of the tie, and not at right angles from it.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The within-described fastening or supporter G for neck-ties and scarfs made of a single piece of sheet metal, with orifice d, with notch z', and turned-up part a, with points or prongs b b, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANCIS HOVEY.
