Be it known that I, ALONZO WOOD, of East Henrietta, in the county of Monroe, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement irr Fastenings for Shirt Collars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings,

making part of' this specification.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a collar, with my improved fastening applied thereto.

Figure 3, a view showing a modified arrangement for securing the loop ot' the neck-tie.

Figure 4, a side elevation, showing a modification of-the spring for closing the jaws.

My invention consists in the combination .of a clamping device for holding the collar, with a suitable stud for attaching the device tothe binding of theneck'of the shirt; and also witha stud or catch for securing the loop of the neck-tie or cravat.

As represented in the drawings, A indicate a collar of usual form. The fastening -device is composed of clamps, a b, provided with bearings, c d, on both sides, which are jointed or pivoted together by means of a small pivot, e, extending crosswise between the bearings. The upper portions'of the clamps are formed with jaws, gg,-

having teeth or points, Zt h, for the purpose of fastening on the ends of the* collar. I also provide a spring, z', between the clamps for holding the jaws g g firmly together, which `may be of any desired form, that represented in iig. 2 being flat, and attached at Zc to the clamp b, and resting over the pivot e, and pressing against the lower part of the clamp a. In fig. 4 the spring z' is of the horse-shoe form shown, both ends being fastened at c, and giving an outward pressure to the lower extremities of the clamps, thus forcing the jaws together. A spiral spring might be employed operating between the clamps for the same purpose. The fastening device is secured to the binding of the neck of the garment by means of a stud or button, Z, inserted through the usual button holes in the same manner as the ordinary bosom stud. On the clamp b is also formed a projecting stud or catch, n, for securing the loop of the ordinary neckltie. This stud or catch may be of a similar form to that of Z, or it may be simply cnt from the body of the clamp by a die, and bent out, as shown in iig. 3.

In applying the device, the stud Z is simply buttoned through the binding of the neck of the shirt, and the ends of the collar are inserted between the jaws, as shown in iig. 1. Thus it will be seen that the fasteningv accomplishes a double purpose: the binding holds the device, and the device holds the collar.` No button is required on the bindingprnd no button holes in the collar. By dispensing wit-h the button holes in the collar,

the ends of the same are made much stronger, which is a matter of great importance in paper collars, where the Y buttons are constantly tearing the ends out. The jaws, holding lengthwise in the fabric, insure a long bearing contact, which is very effectual in holding the collar in place. The stud Orca-tch n forms a simple and eifectivc hohl for the elastic loop, now in common use on the inside of neck-ties, for holding the tie in place. The device when fixed in place, as shown, is situated very compactly and occupies but little space; and when the tie is applied it is hidden completely from sight. The device may be employed for holding the` collar in the rear as well as in front. It also forms a convenient fastening for other purposes-for instance, for looping up ladies' I dresses.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- 1. The combination of the spring clamping device a b with the stud l, operating as described adfor the purpose set forth.
