' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSIAH LE VERNE WOOD, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
' HAT-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,600, dated May 9, 1899.
Application filed October 4, 1898. SerialNo. 692,634. (No model.)
as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in hat-pins; and it consists in a pin provided with a head at one end and a curved hook which extends at right angles to the shank at the other, combined with suitable means applied to the inner side of the head to engage with the outer surface of the hat, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to provide a hat-pin which will catch in the hair of the wearer and which is prevented from turning and workingloose by havingits o'uterend portion engage with the hat, and thus prevent the pin from failing to hold the hat securely in position and to prevent the pin from being lost.
In the accompanying drawings, which represent my invention, Figure l is a perspective of a pin which embodies my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an inverted view. Fig. 4is a perspective of the plate D alone.
The pin is made from a single piece of wire or other suitable material and which is provided with a straight shank A, the head B at its outer end, and the hook O at its inner one. This hook extends at a right angle to the shank and is given either the shape here shown or any other that may be preferred. This hook is passed through the hat and the shank is pushed through sufficiently far to enable the hook to takea firm hold upon the wearers hair, and then the pin is turned by means of the head on the outer side of the hat until the pin has taken a suflicient hold upon the hair to hold the hat securely in position.
If no means were used to prevent the pin from revolving, it would have a constant tendency to turn in the hat, and thus loosen its hold upon the hair, the hat would not be securely held, and the pin would be liable to be lost. In order to prevent this, there is rigidly attached to the inner side of the head a plate D, which is provided with a number of sharp points or projections I, which are preffrom revolving.
7 formed thereon.
swer the samepurpose, the only object of the,
points or projections being to catch in the outer surface of the hat and to prevent the pin working loose after it has once been-made to engage with the hair.
Having thus described my invention, I claim g 1.' A hat-pin provided with a hook to engage with the hair, and witha withdrawable means for catching in the hat to prevent the pin from turning in the hat, substantially as shown.
2. A hat-pin provided with a hook at its in- I ner end, and which is passed through the hat,
and made to engage with the hair, and withdrawable means secured to the inner side of the head of the pin for interlocking with the outer surface of the hat for preventing the pin from turning therein, substantially as described.
3. In a hat-pin, the shank, a hook formed with a plate provided with points or projections, and which is secured to the inner side of the head for the purpose of preventing the pin from revolving in the hat, substantially as specified.
4. In a hat-pin, the shank, straight at its outer end and curved into a hook at its inner one, and provided with a head at the outer end of the straight portion of the shank, combined with a flat plate D which is rigidly secured to both the head and the outer end of the straight portionof the shank, and which is provided with sharp points or projections I to catch in the hat, and thus prevent the pin from turning therein, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J. LE VERNE WOOD.
