BUTTON-HOLE CUTTER.

My invention relates to that class of buttonhole cutters which consist of a pair of notched scissor-blades, the movements of which, in closing, are limited by an adjustable stop, the purpose of the latter being to determine the length of the button-holes to be out. The stops heretofore usually employed to determine the lengths of the button-holes are screws or notched ratchet-blocks attached to one of the handles of the cutters and impinging against the other handle thereof; but these stops are open to the objection that their adustment is liable to be disturbed in handling the cutters, so that when the latter have been set for a certain size of button-hole larger or smaller holes than are desired may be unwittlngly cut by the user,owing to the accidental displacement of the stop.

In my improved button-hole cutters the stop s attached to one of the handles of the cutters in a positive manner,and is adjustablelengtb wiseof the handle to which it is attached toward and from the pivot of the cutters, the said stop being securely held in place by a set screw, so that it cannot be accidentally dis- 5 placed after it has been adjusted to cut a certain length of button-hole when it has been properly secured.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a pair of button-hole cutters with my invention applied thereto. Figs. 2 and 3 are enlarged detail views of the stop-block and its retaining-band. v A denotes the blades of the cutters, and B the handles thereof.

C is a band of proper size to surround the shank of one of the handles B, and also the shank of the stop-block D.

The band C is provided at its overlapping ends with holes 0, through which, when the band is in its operative position, as shown in Fig. 1, the set-screw E passes into the threaded hole d in the stop-block, the said screw extending through the latter to impinge against the handle to hold the stop-block in place. \Vhen the said screw is loosened slightly, the

said stop-block may be adjusted from or toward the pivot a of the cutters, or lengthwise thereof cannot occur.

I do not wish to be understood as limiting my invention to the precise construction herein shown and described, although I have herein set forth what I consider to be the best and most convenient form of my invention; but it is obvious that the stop-block might be permanently attached to or formed in one piece with the band C, or that other modifications within the limits of mechanical skill might be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.

I am aware of the device shown by Kamaks United States Patent No. 316,151, in which a stopping device, which isadjustable lengthwise of the handle by which it is carried, is shown, said stopping device being held to its adjustment by a spring, and being provided with a forwardly-projecting stopping portion, which extends between the shanks of the blades near the pivot. however, differs from mine in that it is not positively secured in position, and is therefore more or less liable to accidental displacement; and also in that the stopping projection does not extend toward the handle opposite to that to which the said device is attached, so as to impinge against the same, but projects forward so near the pivot of the cutters that the latter are liable to be strained and loosened on the pivot, and these disadvantages are avoided by my invention.
