. J. F. THAYER.
I STAPLE FASTENER. No. 343,209. Patented June 8; 1886.
WITNESSES. INVENTEIE.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JAMES F. THAYER, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
STA PLE-FASTENER.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 343,209, dated June 8, 1886.
Application filed March 11, 1886. Serial No. 194,777. (No model.) i
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES F. THAYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staple-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures ot' reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in staple-fasteners; and it consists, essentially, of a fastener formed by doubling a strip of wire atthe center of its length and bending the doubled wire to form a U- shaped staple; and, further, to combine said staple with a head portion rigidly secured to the inner or loop portion of the fastener, all substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views of my improved staple-fastener combined with a head portion; Fig. 3, a like View of my improved staple-fastener.
In carrying out myimprovement the staple A is made by doubling a strip of wire at the center of its length, bringing the free ends of the wire close together. side by side and parwire, the ends of the prongs 2 2 also being swaged, the prongs projecting in the same direction and parallel with each other, as fully shown in Fig. 3.
The staple thus formed may be rigidly secured to a head portion, 3, by compressing or molding the material of which the head portion is composed upon the inner 01' loop portion, 4, of the staple the prongs 1 and 2 2 pro jecting downward from the bottom of the button, the prongs 2 2 standing side by side, as in Fig. 1, or a distance apart, as in Fig. 2.
The button and staple thus combined is secured to any desired article by driving the prongs into the material, or by passing them through said material and clinching the ends of the prongs on the under surface, as may be preferred.
My improved staple is also adapted to-be used in any place where a staple-fastener is required. It is easily and cheaply made, durable in construct-ion, and admirably adapted to the purpose contemplated.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. A U-shaped staple-fastener comprising a loop and penetrating prongs made from doubled wire, one of the prongs being formed from the doubled end of the wire, the remaining prong being formed from the free ends of said wire, arranged and adapted for use substantially as described.
2. The staple A, formed as described, comprising the loop 4, doubled prong 1, and single prongs 2 2, in combination with the button-head 3, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
l JAMES F. THAYER.
