0. A. PRESTON. v COMBINED BUTTON LOOP AND SAFETY PIN. N0.-419,554. Patented Jan. 14,1890.
WITN E5555 INVENTEIR UNITED STATES PATENT OEF CE.
OHARLES'A. PRESTON, OF OAMBRIDGEPORT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE FROST & CO., OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINED BUTTON-LOOP AND SAFETY-PIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 419,554, dated January 14, 1890.
Application filed August 31, 1889. Serial No. 322,677. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. PRESTON, of Oambridgeport, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvein cut in aCombined Button-Loop and Safety- Pin, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to construct a combined button-loop and safetypin whereby expense in manufacture is inaterially diminished and a very desirable and perfect-working device obtained.
The device, as herein shown, consists of a piece of wire, or it may be a strip of metal, bent to present two loops arranged one upon the other. Each loop is fashioned similar to an ordinary safety-pin, it having a back part and a pin portion, and the loops are so arranged that the two pin portions lie substantially parallel with each other, and hence constitute the two sides of the button-loop, while the ends of the two loops of which the device is composed constitute the end of the button-loop. A strap-holding and pin-protecting loop or band is provided, to which the bent loops above described are secured.
Figure 1 shows in face view a combined button-loop and safety-pin embodying this invention; Fig. 2, an end view of the device shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, an edge view of the device shown in Fig. 1; Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7, face views of separate modifications.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, a piece of wire, or it may be a strip of metal, is bent to present two loops connected by the part a. Each loop is made similar to an ordinary safety-pin, comprising a back part b and a pin portion b.- The two loops are arranged c011- tiguously, one-upon the other, overlapping, as shown, so that the two pin portions b 1) constitute the sides of the button-loop, and the ends of the two loops together form the end of the button-loop. The pin portions 1) b are suitably pointed. A strap-holding and pin-protecting band 12 consisting of a flat strip of metal, is made to embrace or inclose' the lower or broadened end of the loops, the ends of said band not quite meeting, to thus leave an entrance for the pin portions b b. Thestrap s is passed over the connecting part a, beneath, and thence over the band 19 and upon itself, but beneath the pin and also the pin protecting portions thereof. By means of the strap-holding portion 19 the strap 8 may be easily adjusted and held'taut, and by means of the pin-protecting portions of the band the points of the pin portions 1) are duly protected, and the pin portions, bein g spring-acting, may be moved toward each other and withdrawn from the pin-protecting band and utilized to engage the material when the button is missing.
Referring to Fig. 4, the two loops comprising the back portion 1) and pin portions 1) b,
connected by the part a, are shown; but the strap-holding and pin-protecting portion is made from a piece of metal cut into suitable shape'and bent to present two portions, beneath which the pin portions are held.
Referring to Fig. 5, similar loops to those shown in Fig. 1 are represented, although the strap is carried only over the connecting part a.
Referring to Fig. 6, similar loops are presented, the pin-holding band being arranged a little farther up on the loops, said loops being bent to receive it.
Referring to Fig. 7, a wire or other metal rod is bent to present not only the two loops comprising the back portions Z) Z) and pin portions 2; b and connecting part a, but also to form pin protecting or holding portions.
In view of the many modifications herein shown it will be seen that the results or essential features shown in Fig. 1 may be variously carried out, so I do notdesire to limit myself to any particular or precise construction of the parts.
1. .A combined button-loop and safety-pin comprising two overlapping loops arranged one on the other, each having a back part and a pin portion, and a strap-holding and pin protecting and inclosing band arranged on the broadened lower end of the loops, substantially as described.
2. A combined button-loop and safety-pin comprising two connecting-loops arranged contiguously, one on the other, each having a I0 embracing the lower end of the loops and having an opening therein through which said pin portions may bepassed, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of I 5 two snbscribin witnesses.
CHARLES A. PRESTON. lVitnesses:
BERNIOE J. NoYEs, FREDERICK L. EMERY.
