UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
EDWARD KNOW'LES HEAPS, OF SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND.
' CUFF-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,763, dated July 16, 1895.
Application filed March 6| 1895- To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD KNOWLEs IIEAPS, a subject of the Queen of Great Britspeciication.
letters of referenceindicate like parts in anyv of the figures.
Figure l represents the two strips of metal from which the appliance is made; Fig. 2, the form to which the strips are bent before being secured together; Fig. 3, the strips secured together by rivets and ready for use, in plan and edge View; Fig. 4, plan and edge View of the cuff-holder when made to be secured to the sleeve by safety-pins or the like.
In carrying out my present invention, I
` take two strips of suitable elastic metal, preferably steel-such as those marked A and B in Eig. l-and I punch out the rivetholes A and B', also the sewing-holes at each end ofthe strip B and the slot G, which is for givingincreased grip. I then bend each strip to the configuration shown in Fig. 2, or thereabout, which ligure shows their relative positions if held side by side, with their ends'D (which form the point of resistance to their elastic action when they are forced apart) in the same position as when riveted together. The strips may be harden ed and tempered, or steel t may be used, that will not require such processes. They are then riveted together, as
shown in Fig. 3, which compresses the strips, as shown inthe edge view, and creates a powerful gripping force between the two parts. In order to give a better local hold upon Serial llo. 540,785. (Nn model.)
the cuff when one is forced between the two strips,^a portion of the strip A enters or en gages with the slot C, which produces a slight indentation of the eu.
It is not necessary that the strip A shall be narrower than the strip B, as shown, as it may be of the same breadth, and a projection may be formed upon it to engage with the slot C. The end A2 of the lstrip A is bent upward to enable the edge of the cuff to enter readily, and I wish it to be understood that the slot C may be made in strip A and the engaging part upon the strip B, instead of as before described. This is shown in Fig. 4, which illustrates how the ends of the appliance may be constructed for a safety-pin E to be passed through the eye so formed to secure it to the sleeve, instead of sewing it in.
I am aware that clips of various construction have been used for the purpose of hold- What I do claim as my invention, and de-V sire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A cud holder comprising the plate B arranged to be secured to the shirt sleeve and having a central slit, and the supplemental plate A having one end riveted to the plate B, said plate A having an upturned end and an intermediate portion passing through the slit, the said plate A having its free end terminating on the same side of the plate B on which the said plate A is riveted substantially as described.
2. A cuff holder comprising the plate B and the spring plate- A secured thereto at one end, said plate B having a central raised portion projecting on the side to lwhich the plate Ais attached, said raised portion having a slot therein and the said plate A having an intermediate portion extending in the slot in the raised part of the plate B and having an upturned free end terminating on the same side of the plate B to which plate A is attached.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have affixed hereto my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 18th day of February, 1895.
