SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters :Patent No. 497,040, dated May 9, 1893.

Application led December 14, 1892. Serial No. 45 5,159. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, HUBBARD D. B. VIL- LIAMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Cuff-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in cuff fasteners, of that class which are attached to, and are adjustable upon the wristband button, and the objects of my invention are, lirst, to provide a cuff fastener by which a cuff can be adjusted to suit the wearer, without removing the garment; second, to make a novel, cheap, durable, and efficient means for the purpose stated.

In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a longitudinal edge view of my improved fastener, showing the mode of attaching the same, to the Wristband and cuff, the said cuff and Wristband shown in section. Fig. 2, is a bottom plan View of fastener. Fig. 3, is a top View of same showing its gen eral construction.

In the accompanying drawings, A indicates my improved cuff fasten er, which is composed of parts which Will be more fully described hereinafter. l

B indicates a single piece of spring metal which is bent upon itself, to form two parallel bars C and D. The upper bar C. is formed with a number of perforations, or indentations E. The lower bar D is slotted to form two parallel bars F and G. VThe object of the two parallel bars formed by the lower plate D. is for the purpose of forming a, guide to allow the Wristband button I-I free passage from one end of the fastener to the other. The opening formed is only sufficiently large to allow the neck of the Wristband button to pass longitudinally Without impinging the same. The space between the upper and lower bars is of a sufficient distance apart to impinge the head of the Wristband button and force the round portion of the head into the recesses or perforations E. formed in the upper plate or bar B. holding the fastener in any position upon the Wristband button II.

.I indicates a loop or large opening which is formed at the bend K. This opening is made suiiiciently large to admit the passage of the head of the Wristband button when attaching the fastener to the same.

L indicates a tip neck button which is hinged upon a standard M secured upon the upper side of fastener. This button is for the purpose of attaching the cuff fastener to the cuff N. as shown in Fig. l.

It will be readily seen that When the fastener is secured to the cuff, and the wearer Wishes to put on the same, the said cuff is drawn over the hand and the large loop J. is placed over the Wristband button II, by pressing downward upon the cud. The head of the said button passes between the parallel bars, :until the head passes into any one of the recesses or perforations R. The upper and lower bars B and C, have the tension of the spring toward each other which clamps the Wristband button in any position required.

I do not Wish to limit myself to the exact` construction, that is, to make the fastener of one piece ofspring sheet metal. The upper portion can be made of a piece of sheet metal and the lower parallel bars can be made of spring Wire secured to the upper bar or plate, in any suitable manner.

I do not make any claim upon the tip-neck button attached to the upper side of the fastener, because the art of securing a fastener to the cuff is old; but

The herein described cuff holder comprising the lower slotted part having the eye and the upper part bent upon and secured to the lower part and having a series of perforations, and the stem or shankrigidly secured to theupper part andvcarrying the hinged cuff-holding button; the lower slotted member or part forming a guide for the Wrist-band stud the head thereof engaging one of the perforations in the upper part for adjusting the cuff.
