HAT-FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,405, dated. March 31, 1896.

Be it known that I, KATHIE LIEBREIOH, a citizen of Germany, residing at the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new, useful, and valuable Improvement in Ladies Hat-Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention has relation to hat-fasteners; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts, as hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the fastener. Fig. 2 is a top View of the fastener. Fig. 3 shows a front and side view of the shank of the spiral. Fig. 4 is a top plan View of the blank forming the head of the fastener.

The fastener consists of the spring-wire 1, bent spirally in shape, the general transverse shape of the coil being conical, as shown in Fig. 1. The lower end of the wire 1 is pointed, as at 2. The upper end of the wire passes up perpendicular from the coil, said upper end forming a shank 3, as shown in Fig. 3. The extreme upper end of the said shank is pointed, as at 4. Just below 4 is the section 5, the original shape of the wire, and just below 5 the wire is flattened for a short distance, as at 6. The lower edges of the section 5 are slightly beveled, while the upper edges of the shank 3, adjoining section 6,'are abrupt.

The head 7 consists of a single piece of sheet metal. A perforation 8 is located in the center of the sheet, and the outer edges of the sheet are fashioned into radially-extending leaves 9 9. Said leaves are bent up and give the transverse appearance of the head that ofa cone. (See Fig. 1.)

When the head is in place on the shank 3, the bottom of the head rests on the upper shoulders of the shank 3, while the upper edges of the leaves 9 9 gear against the lower edges of the section 5.

The device is applied as follows: The head is removed from the shank 3. This is done by pulling the head away from the shank. The point 4 is then passed through a perforation in the hat, and the head is then again placed on the shank 3. Thus the fastener is attached to the hat. Two fasteners are put on each hat, at opposite points. The hat is then secured to the head of the wearer by turning the fastener, which pushes the lower point 2 through the hair, and thus the coil is embedded in the hair. The wire 1, being springy, allows the coil to assume substantially a plane against the side of the head, one coil fitting in another.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. Afastener consisting of a suitable means for penetrating and lodging in a substance, a shank secured to said means, said shank havin g shoulders extending laterally therefrom, a removable head having a perforation adapted to pass over the upper part of the shank, spring-leaves secured to the head and adapted to hear at their upper ends against the shoulders of the shank, as set forth.

2. A fastener consisting of a suitable means for penetrating and lodging in a substance, a shank secured to said means, said shank being pointed at its upper end, said shank having shoulders extending laterally therefrom, a removable head havinga perforation adapted to pass over the upper part of the shank, spring-leaves secured to the head and adapted to hear at their upper ends against the shoulders of the shank, as set forth.
