Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARTHUR GARNER YORK, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at \Volverhampton, in the county of Stafford, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Unbuttoning Devices or Implements, of which the following is a specification.

In the use of buttoned leggings considerable difficulty is experienced in unbuttoning them, and the same difficulty is also expe rienced to some extent in unbuttoning other articles using buttons and buttonholes for fastenings, such as boots or shoes. In view of this the present invention has for its object a simple and effective device or implement for effecting such unbuttoning without injury to the buttons and buttonho les.

In the accompanying drawings, which serve to illustrate an embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 shows in plan the blank of sheet metal from which the device is formed. Fig. 2 shows in plan the outer face of the device, and Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the inner face thereof. Fig. 4 is an edge view of the device as seen from the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a cross-section at line as x in Fig. 3 looking toward the left in the latter figure. Figs. 6, 7, and 8 are views illustrating the operation of unbuttoning with the device. These views show successive positions of the implement. Fig. 9 is a section at line y y in Fig. 7.

The implement, formed from sheet metal, as steel, has primarily, as seen in Fig. 1, a terminal hook c at its operative end, a flat and rather broad head f, and a flat tongue (Z on the same lateral edge of the,head as the hook c. The handle h is conveniently wide and will be preferably embossed, as at p, to impart stifiness or strength. The shank g and neck 7c connect the handle it with the headf.

In finishing the implement the lug d of the blank, Fig. 1, is bent back over the head, Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5, to form a flat hook e, which stands out free from the head f, as seen best in Fig. 5. This view also shows how the terminal hook c is bent out laterally toward the face where the flat hook e is situated, so as to be somewhat oblique to that face of the head f The operation of the implement may be ascertained from inspection of Figs. 6 to 9. The oblique terminal hook c is inserted in the buttonhole m, as seen in Fig. 6, and the handle turned to the right, as indicated by arrow I) in Fig. 6. IVhen turned to the position seen in Fig. 7, the fiat hook will have begun to engage and take behind the button a, and when turned about to the position seen in Fig. 8 the button will have been forced back through the buttonhole at its upper edge, so that by turning the implement still farther a complete disengagement of the button will be effected.

At the right in the first three figures the dotted lines show how a button-hook is or may be formed on the other end of the handle 72 Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. An implement for the purpose specified comprising a handle, a flat headf thereon a terminal hook c at one edge of said head and projecting obliquely in a lateral direction from the fiat face of the head, and a flat hook e on that edge of the head from which the point of the hook 0 projects, the end of the hook e projecting back over the head in a direction opposite to that in which the hook 0 projects, said hook 6 being disposed between the terminal hook and the handle.

2. An implement for the purpose specified, comprising a handle, a flat head f thereon, a terminal hook c at one edge of said head, and a flat hook e on that edge of the head from which the point of the hook 0 projects, the end of the hook e projecting back over the head in a direction opposite to that in which the hook 0 projects, said hook 0 being disosed between the terminal hook and the andle.
