SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 520,552, dated May 29, 1894.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM W. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuff-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame.

In the manufacture and use of cuff fasteners or holders, in which the shank was adapted to be connected with the cuff by an upwardly extending portion bentfrom the said shank and provided with a button, much difficulty has been experienced from the breaking of the device at the angle where the bend takes place. It is practically necessary, for economical purposes, that such devices be formed of thin brass. If the brass is so soft as not to be liable to break by brittleness, it will be too flexible to properly retain its shape and hold the cuff. If made sufficiently stiff for these latter purposes its temper is such that, the bend hereinbefore referred to having once been made, by the subsequent use of the device in inserting it into the button holes of stiff cuffs, and even by such manipattached to the cuff, and which will be strong- I and durable in that portion of it by which the attachment .to the cuff button hole is effected.

With such object in view my improvement consists in a cuff holder comprising a strip provided with a suitable clasp, such for instance as that patented to me J une 28, 1887, No. 365,662, and provided further with a supplemental strip having a broad or long base adapted to be secured upon the upper surface of the first mentioned strip, and having bent up from its intermediate portion an L or T shaped button or projection. The two ends of the said supplemental strip thus rest upon and are secured to the surface of the first viding the said jaws at their rear ends with a guard of such character as will deflect any portion of the coat lining or other garment which might otherwise be caught in the rear finger piece of the spring jaws.

. My improvement further consists in mak ing the said guard and the said button or socuring device in one and the same piece, and securing them together to the mainbody or strip of the cuff holder.

My invention further consists in the parts and combinations thereof hereinafter particularly set forth and claimed.

In order to make my improvements more clearly understood I have shown in the accompanying drawings means for carrying the same into practical effect, without however limiting my invention, in its useful applications, to the particular construction which, for the sake of illustration, I have delineated.

In said drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective View of a cuff fastener, or holder, embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the two portions of my preferred form of cuff holder separated from each other.

Referring to the drawings 1 indicates a bar of suitable metal such as brass, and which in practice will be highly finished and plated with nickel or in any other suitable way. The said strip is formed with or has attached thereto suitable securing jaws 2 and 3, for instance of the character illustrated in my patent hereinbefore referred to. The rear end of the movable jaw 3 is indicated at 4, the said end constituting a thumb or' finger piece by-the depression of which the jaws will be separated for attachment to the shirt sleeve. The shank of the strip 1 is preferably provided with turned up edges 5 extending its full length as illustrated in the drawings.

6 is a supplemental strip or plate of metal ICQ or other suitable substance having a long or broad base extending parallel and in contact with the upper surface of the strip 1. At its intermediate portion the said supplemental strip is bent upward to form a double shank 7, the upper end of which is further bent to form an L shaped or T shaped double head 8. The extreme end of the supplemental strip thus forms an extension 9 which is in contact with and secured to the end of the strip 1. The securing stud or button is thus formed with double bends at 10 and 11, giving it great rigidity and strength and enabling it to be repeatedly attached to and detached from the stiffest cuff without breaking at the bend. The supplemental strip is preferably madeofthe same width as the space between the edgeflanges 5 of the strip 1, and fits neatly between .the same. At suitable points the said=flanges 5 are provided with extensions 12 which are adaptedto be bent over and down upon the uppersurface of the supple-- mental strip so as to secure it firmly in place.

This guard is of such character as to deflect any garment which It will be observed that the base plate of the button gives great strength and rigidity to the main body or strip of the holder.

What I claim is-- 1.. In a cuff-holder the combination with the main strip or bar having the jaw 2 and lever 3, 4, for attachment to the shirt sleeve and side ,flanges 5, of a supplemental stiffening strip 6 fitting between said flanges, carrying the stud, and having the guarding bend 15, substantially as set forth.

2. In acuff-holder the combination with the main strip or bar having the attaching means, and side flanges 5, of the supplemental stifiening strip 6 fitting between said flanges and secured thereto at both ends, and havingits intermediate portion bent up to formthe stud with a double shank and double button portion or head, substantially 'as set forth.-

- 3. In a cuff-holder the combination with the 1 main strip 1 having means for attachment to the sleeve, of a supplemental stiffening strip secured to said main strip and having-a portion intermediate between its ends bentup.
