CUFF-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 492,968, dated March '7, 1898.

Beit known that I, JOHN V. PILOHEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jeerson and State of Kentucky,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oud-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to that class4 of devices by means of which cuffs are removably attached to a portion of the wearing apparel, such as the sleeve of a shirt or coat, and its object is to provide means whereby such a cuff holder may be attached to a cuff, and to a sleeve, and means for adjusting the two attaching devices to and from one another in the length of the cuff hold er, in order that the cuff may be adjusted in its location so as to project more or less from the end of the sleeve.

To this end my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts forming a cuff holder, hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,in which:-

5 represents the body portion consisting of a narrow strip or bar of sheet metal provided with a series of perforations or stops 6, and having a bend or offset 7 at one end, to which is attached a clamp 8. This clamp comprises two jaws 9 and 10, pivoted together on a oentral pin 11, around which is coiled a spring 12, that tends to separate the rear or handle end ofthe clamp and to close the jaws.

13 represents a carriage provided with side arms 14. This carriage is located upon the body 5 and the arms 14. are bent around underneath the body to hold the carriage thereon, yet permitting it to slide freely endwise.

15 is a head formed upon the body to prevent the carriage from being lost off.

16 is a tongue of the carriage provided with a nib 17 adapted to engage any one of the series of stops 6, and to be held therein by frictional contact from the spring pressure of the tongue. This tongue is preferably formed by punching out of the carriage a loop-shaped portion of metal, leaving the aperture 18, along the sides and around the free end of the tongue, and leaving the oth er end of the tongue attached to and integral with the body of the carriage. The metal of which the carriage is formed has sufficient elasticity to give the tongue the resilience required, The nib 17 is rounded so that by applyingalittle force endwise to the carriage the nib may be sprung out of any one of the stops and the carriage be caused to slide to the point required. The carriage is also provided with a button formed by bendingaportion thereof upward andthen rearward, the rearward portion 19 being the button, and the upward portion 2O the neck thereof.

21 isa lip of the button projecting forward of the neck portion 20, from which it is sheared before the button is bent backward. The form of the lip shown in plan view Fig. I, corresponds to the form of the opening beneath it which was caused by its being sheared as described from the portion 20, that opening being best shown at 22, Fig. III.

In operation the button may be rst secured in a button-hole of the cuff and the clamp S may be attached to any adjacent portion of the sleeve, then the carriage or slide 13 may be slid along upon the body or bar 5 until the cuff is held projecting the desired amount from the sleeve. The clamp 8 is adapted to engage a sleeve at any point, and it is not dependent upon a button-hole for attachment, but the carriage provided with the button 19 is only adapted to engage a cud or similar garment provided with a button-hole.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I believe to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following: g

The combination of a bar or body having at one end means for attachment to asleeve and provided with stops at intervals in its length; a carriage fitted to slide upon the body and provided with a spring to engage the said stops; and a button connected with the carriage by a neck, the main portion of the button head being bent over from the neck, and
