UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMILE PIGKHARDT, OF ISLINGTON, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE FROST, GEORGE H. PHELPS, AND GEORGE A. FROST, ALL OF NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
CUFF-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 386,345, dated July 17,1888.
Application filed November 29,1887. Serial No. 256.420. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMILE 'PICKHARDT, of Islington, county ofNort'olk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Cuff-Holders, of which the following descrip tion, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
7 This invention has for its object the prod ne'- 10 tion of an expansible or spring cuff-holder, more especially adapted to be used by ladies, the said cuff-holder obviating the use of pins in the dress or coat sleeve.
In accordance with my invention the expansible cuff-holder comprises a band or strip, preferably ofsheet metal, bent to substantially conform to the shape of the cuff when ready for use, and one or more spring clips preferably integral with the said band or strip.
My improved cuffholder in practice will be applied to that edge or end of the cuff not provided with a cuff-button, the said edge or end being inserted between the strip or band and the spring clips, by which hitter the said holder is secured to the cuff.
My improved cul'fholder may be contracted by compressing the cuff so as to be inserted in sleeves of varying sizes, and when properly inserted in the said sleeve pressure is removed 0 and the spring cuff-holder permitted to expand to cause the cuff to fit snugly within the sleeve.
Myinventiou therefore consists of a metallic spring cuffholder comprising a band or strip 5 and one or more springclips secured thereto and extended substantially at a right angle to said strip, and between which and the said band or strip the edge or end of the cuff is inserted.
Figure 1 shows one of my improved cuff holders applied to a cuff, the latter being represented by dotted lines; and Fig. 2 shows a modified form of my invention, wherein the ends of the holder are adapted to slide one in or with relation to the other.
The band or strip a, comprising the main or body portion of my improved cuff-holder, is
, herein shown as applied to the inner side ofthe cuff a, (indicated by dotted lines,) the said band or strip having secured to or forming part of it one or more clips, bent upward substantially at right angles to the length of the strip or band a, to embrace the upper or inner edge or end of the cuff. The clipsb are bent or otherwise made to possess sullieient spring-power to firmly attach the cuff-holder to the cuff. In Fig. 2 the strip or band a is provided at one end with ears 0, to form a guide in which the other end of the said strip or band may be inserted.
In practice the spring cuff-holder is contracted when the cult is compressed to be inserted within the sleeve, and when the cuff is in proper or desired position the pressure is removed from the cuff and the spring cul'fholder permitted to expand or enlarge, thus causing the cuff to fit snugly the sleeve of the dress or coat.
The spring-clips b are herein shown as secured to the band or strip a, so as to come on the outer side of the cuff; but if desired they may be secured so as to have the band on the outer side of the cuff.
My improved spring cuffholder may be readily and quickly applied to cuffs of vary- 7 mg sizes.
By the term band or strip I mean to include a band of any desired width, or it may be a wire.
I claim- I As an improved article of manufacture, a spring cuff-holder consisting ofa band or strip, a, having two or more spring-clips, Z), extended substantially at a right angle to the length of the said band or strip and adapted to embrace 85 the edge of the cuff, the said cuff-holder being frictionally retained, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two sub- 0 scribing witnesses.
EMILE PIOKHARDT.
