TIE-CLASP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 12, 1912 Application filed July 22, 1910. Serial No. 573,347.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW SENATOR, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tie-Clasps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tie clasps, and has for an object to provide a clasp of this character wherein a spring-gripping memher is designed to hold the clasp securely to the tie, the object of the invention being to construct a novel form of spring for detachably engaging the set piece, monogramcarrying member or design.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views:-Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through my improved tie clasp. Fig. 2 is a front View thereof, the set piece being removed. Fig. 3 is a back view of the set piece. Fig. 4 is a View similar to Fig. 1 showing a slightly modified form of my invention.
The tie clasp consists of a substantially U-shaped member which is formed to provide the spaced arms 1 and 2 which are connected with each other by the curved end portions 3. The arm 2 has formed therein an elongated slot 4 through which a portion of a clamping or gripping spring 5 extends. The gripping portion of the spring is disposed immediately between the arms 1 and 2 of the clasp and its free extremity extends slightly in advance of the free extremity of the arm 2. The spring has its major portion struck outwardly to lie out of a plane with the minor portion 6 of such spring, the said minor portion being stamped so as to lie in direct contact with the inner surface of the said arm 2. The outer extremity of the spring is bent upon itself and constructed to form a substantially V-shaped head 7. By bending the head 7 against the arm 2 of the spring, as shown at 4, the spring is held to the clasp without resorting to permanent fastening means such as solder, or the like. The outer extremity of the arm 2 is formed to provide a knuckle 8 to which is pivoted a lever 9. This lever is formed with an actuating portion 10 to engage the free extremity of the spring 5 so as to force such extremity of the spring into effective gripping engage ment with the tie. Near the free extremity of the spring is formed a series of spurs 11 for engaging the tie to hold the clasp in the adjusted position thereon.
In an article of the character described and shown, it is extremely desirable to provide means for attaching the desired emblem, flag, design or set piece to the clasp, hence the construction of the head 7 of the spring, the said head being formed to fit in the groove 12 on the back side of the emblem or set piece 13. The groove 12 is formed preferably through the provision of spaced ribs 14 which are arranged in diverging re lation with respect to each other. This construction is such that the emblem or flag of the designed character or type can be readily applied to the clasp to suit the taste of the wearer.
In the modified form of my invention shown in Fig. 1, a gem setting 15 is en1- ployed in lieu of the emblem 13. The setting is designed for detachable engagement with the head 7 and as illustrated, it is provided With a suitable stone or precious gem 16.
I claim A tie clasp having a spring gripping member, the said clasp being of a substantially U-shaped formation and formed to provide spaced arms, the lower arm being formed to provide an elongated slot, the said gripping member having its free end disposed between the arms and provided with a downwardly and rearwardly extending portion opposite the free end whereby the said portion is brought in direct contact with the clasp, and having its extremity opposite its free end extending through the said slot and bent rearwardly and then upon itself to form a head, a design carrying member secured to the head, the said head forming a holder to securely retain the spring gripping member in position within the clasp.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW SENATOR.
