ANDERSON, acitizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuff-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My present invention relates to that class of clasps, holders, or supporters which is especially adapted for securing cufis to the sleeves of the shirt or other garment; but the improvement may be put to other uses wherever it is desired to securea garment or other article having a buttonhole or other aperture adjustably or detachably to another garment or support.

My invention especially relates to the means whereby the device may be caused to pass through such buttonhole or aperture and obtain a secure hold upon the cuff, garment, or article, said means perinittin g a ready attachment and detachment of the device, but giving at the same time a very secure hold which cannot be accidentally released.

With such ends in view my invention comprises a means for engaging a garment-sleeve or other article orsupport, a plate or arm connected with such engaging means and adapted to pass through the button hole or aperture of the cuff or other article, and a pivoted plate or arm adapted to detachably interlock with or engage said first-mentioned arm, said arms having a spring or yielding action relative to each other in the direction of the length of the pivoted arm.

My invention further consists in the parts and combinations thereof hereinafter particularly set forth and claimed.

In order to make the improvement more clearly understood, I have shown in the accompanying drawings means for carrying it into practical effect, without, however, limiting the application of the invention to the particular construction which for the sake of illustration 1 have delineated.

In said drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a clasp or holder embodying my i11- vention, the pivoted arm being shown in its open or disengaged position. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing what may be termed the stationary arm inserted in the buttonhole or aperture of a cuff or other article, with the pivoted arm closed and the attaching means secured to a sleeve or other support. Fig. 3 is a sectional view, enlarged, of the stationary and pivoted arms. Fig. 4 is a section on line A B, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a slightly-different form of my invention.

Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates an engaging or attaching means which may consist of two pivoted and spring-actuated jaws 2 and 3 of well-known character, adapted to clasp and hold the edge of a sleeve or other support.

l is a plate, consisting, preferably, of an extension integral with the jaw 2 and carrying an arm, which may be termed the stationary arm, 5, adapted to pass through a cuff-button hole or other aperture.

6 is a depression, recess, or slot formed in the arm 5 and extending crosswise thereof.

7' is an outwardlyextending flange consisting, preferably, of the bent-over upper edge of the arm 5.

Sis a pivoted arm mounted by a pin or pivot 9 upon the plate 4 and carrying at its end an engaging flange or projection 10, extending in a direction parallel with the plate 4 and at right angles or substantially so to the plate or arm 5. WVhen the arms 5 and 8 are in line with each other, the flange l rests in the slot or depression 6 and retains the arm in place in the buttonhole. When the arm 8 is turned on its pivot 9, the flange passes into or out of said slot by reason of a relative yielding of the arms from each other in the direction of the length of the arm 8 and at substantially right angles to the arm 5. Such yielding is preferably secured by making the arm 5 or plate a, or both, of elastic sheet metal and, in effect, a spring; but it will be understood that the arm 8 may bend, which will enable it to slightly lengthen or shorten as the flange or projection 10 passes into or out of the slot 6, or such yielding or spring action may take place partly in each of said arms.

Inorder to prevent any accidental bending of the plate 4, which would cause the disen gagement of said arms, I, by preference and in the best form of my invention which I have illustrated, cause the projection 10 to engage the outer end or edge and the under face of the lip or flange 7, passinginto the slot 6, from the outer side of the arm 5. I also make the projection, when preferred, in line with the arm 8, as shown in Fig. 5 at and form the flange 7 on the inner side of the arm 5, extending toward and adapted to overlap the projection or flange 10. With the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4, however, I obtain a projection or flange 11, which will lie upon the face of the cuff and prevent the arm 8 from entering the buttonhole. tion 10 beveled or rounded on one or both sides, so that in swinging it into or out of engagement with the arm 5 it will ride easily over the latter at each side of the slot or depression 6.

The engaging teeth, projections, or parts 12 of the jaws 2 and 3 may be formed at any desired point, either at the side of the device, as shown in full lines in Fig. I, or as indicated in dotted lines in the same figure.

While I prefer to make my holder right and left, it will be understood that the attaching means or clasp may be movably connected with the plate 4 and capable of being shifted in a well-known manner, so as to adapt the device for either the right or left wrist. My invention may also be availed of by a mere in- 5 I also form the projecversion of the parts forming the slot in the part 8 and the projection 10 on the part 5 in an obvious manner.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination, with means for engaging the sleeve or other article, of a plate having an arm 5, in which is formed a recess 6, and an arm 8, pivoted and movable laterally on the plate and having a longitudinal cam projection l0, adapted to look into said recess and held thereby from movementin either direction, said arm 5 having a spring movement in the direction of the length of the device, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with means for engaging the sleeve or other article, of a plate having an arm 5, in which is formed a recess 6, and which 'carries a lip 7, and an arm 8, pivoted and movable laterally on the plate and having a longitudinal inwardly-extending cam projection 10, adapted to look over the lip and into said recess and held thereby from movement in either direction, said arm 5 having a spring movement in the direction of the length of the device, substantially as set forth.
