TED STATES 1 PA EEC EUGENE MOREHOUSE, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO B. A. BALLOU 86 COMPANY, INC., 0]! PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, A CORPORATION OF RHODE ISLAND.
NECKSCARF-FASTENEB.
Application filed December 14, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE MOREHOUSE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neckscarf-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to spring fasteners for wearing apparel and has for its object to provide a fastener of the above character formed of a single piece of resilient metal, the same being folded near its middle portion nearly upon itself forming a pair of jaws both having cooperating gripping lips whereby the engaged portion of the fabric is crimped and firmly held by being crowded out of its normal plane, the device being more particularly adapted to be readily applied to a shirt front to fasten the free ends of the neck scarf thereto by a spring pressure.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, Figure 1- is an enlarged perspective view illustrating my improved fastener in detail. Fig. 2- is an end View of the fastener showing the relative position of the cooperating lips. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 1 and illustrates the cooperating lips on the jaws as engaging and crimping the fabric held between them. Fig. l is a view showing a shirt front and my retaining device securing the neck scarf thereto.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates an ordinary shirt front having a collar to which is applied the usual neck scarf 2, the free ends of this scarf are shown as being secured in position by means of my improved fastener 3. This fastener is preferably made of metal cut from sheet spring stock, which Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 13, 1915.
Serial No. 665,697.
of one continuous strip of sheet metal the same is bent near its middle portion at over and back nearly upon itself, as illustrated in Fig. 1, forming a pair of opposing jaws 5 and 6, the end 7 of jaw 5 being turned outwardly slightly forming an open mouth, said jaw is slightly narrower than the opposite jaw 6 and is provided on its outer edges with a pair of downwardly turned lips 8 8, see Figs. 2 and 3, and the opposite jaw 6 is provided with a pair of upwardly turned lips 99 on its outer edges, which lips extend in a direction opposite to that of lips 8 the lips of one pair being out of longitudinal alinement with those of the other pair so that when the fabric is engaged by the lips of this fastener, it is crimped or crowded out of its normal plane and firmly held thereby.
, I claim:
A neck scarf clasp constructed of a single continuous strip of thin resilient sheet metal folded near its middle portion over and back nearly upon itself forming a pair of slightly open spring jaws having flaring eX- tremities for easy entrance, a pair of integral inwardly turned cooperating gripping lips formed on the side edges of each jaw by bending the stock inward, the lips of one pair being out of longitudinal alinement with those of the other pair, whereby the fabric when engaged is crowded out of its normal plane between these cooperating lips and firmly retained by the inherent spring pressure of said jaws.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EUGENE MOREHOUSE.
