PATENT OEEicE.
ALBERT EDWARD MOORE, OF \VINNIPEG, CANADA.
SClSSORS-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 742,710, dated October 2'7, 1903.
Application filed November 10, 1902. Serial No. 130.697.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT EDWARD MOORE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of \Vinnipeg, in the Province of Manitoba and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Scissors- Ilolder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a device for holding scissors attached to ones clothing.
The prime object is to provide means for holding the scissors withinconvenient reach of the user and by which the scissors may be held securely and readily engaged with or disengaged from the holder.
To this end the invention comprises, stated in general terms, a body, gripping-fingers carried thereby and serving to hold the scissors, and a peculiarly-constructed device at the rear of the body for attaching it to the clothing of the wearer.
This specification is an exact description of one example of my invention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the invention and indicating the position of the scissors in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the device, and Fig. 3 is a side edge elevation. manner of securing the gripping device to the holder, a part of the gripping portion being broken away.
The body of the device is constructed, preferably, of stout sheet metal and comprises a widened upper portion to, having forwardlycurved lower edges a at each side, these edges forming flanges which are adapted to engage with the front sides of the finger-loops of the scissors when the scissors are moved fully into the holder. The body also comprises a downwardly-extended centrally-located back member a along which the shanks of the scissors are adapted to extend. Attached to each side of the centrally-disposed member (L2 of the body are the grippingfingers b, which are integral with the back member a and arranged to be slightly yielding. These fingers I) extend forwardly and thence in- -but if it be desired to Fig. at is a rear view showing the gripper, comprising a spring {N0 model.)
wardly, nearly meeting each. other. The widened upper portion a of the body of the device serves as a back guard for the fingerloops of the scissors and also as a means for guiding the scissors into place, thus rendering the insertion of the scissors into the holder an easy matter.
It is intended that the scissors be thrust downward between the central back portion a of the body and the gripping-fingers b, the finger-loops of the scissors lying in front of the widened upper part a of the body. If it be desired to hold the scissors but lightly in place, they need not be pushed down so far as to engage the finger-loops withthe flanges a; hold the scissors with all security they should be pushed down until they assume the position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, the finger-loops then engaging the flanges a to limit the downward movementof the scissors and the spring gripping-fingers b pressing tightly again st the shanks of the scissors at the points where the shanks are usually the thickest. This will hold the scissors securely and prevent their detachment except upon the application to the scissors of a positive upward force.
It is to be noted that the flat depending shank portion or member a will prevent the scissors coming into contact with and injuring the clothing of the wearer.
For attaching the device to the clothing of the user I provide a peculiarly constructed gripping-plate having one end 0 (best indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 3) extended downward along the back face of the part a of the body and formed with laterally-disposed lugs c, which are engaged in corresponding orifices formed in tongues a struck out and extending rearward from the body of the device. The grippingplate proper, 0 extends from the end 0 rearward and thence downward and terminates in a forwardly-bent serrated flange 0 at each side of and above which are forwardly-bent serrated supplemental gripping-flanges 0 (See Figs. 2 and 3.) These parts 0 and c are preferably formed integral with the parts .0 and 0 which is best effected by stamping the parts up with a suitable die. Inthe outer ends of the tongues a are mounted the trunnions (1 of the elbow-lever d. The elbow-lever (Z is adapted to be manually operated to assume the position shown in Fig. 3, or a position in which the long arm of the lever extends outward approximately perpendicular to the body and the short arm lies flat against the gripping-plate 0 In the former position the gripping-plate c has its flanges c and c" pressed firmly forward, so as to hold the part of the garment between the back section a and the gripping-flanges. I11 Fig. 3, 6 indicates the part of a garment to which it may be assumed the device is applied. In the latter position of the elbowlever (Z the plate 0 is allowed to spring backward and disengage the gripping-flanges c and c from the garment. Therefore to secure the device the lever dshould first be thrown, so as to allow the grippiiig plate c to move rearward, and then the part of the garment to which the device is to be applied should be introduced between the body and the grippingplate, after which the lever d should be thrown into the active position, (shown in Fig. 3,) and the holder will then be secure.
The device may be attached in numerous positions upon the wearer, as will be apparent. It may, for example, be attached to the waistband or belt of a womans apparel or to the mouth of a pocket on a mans apparel. The device may be used with convenience by persons in various employments.
Various changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of my invention may be resorted to at will without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. Hence I consider myself entitled to all such variations as may lie within the intent of my claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A scissorsholder, comprising a body having an enlarged portion provided with a flange to limit the movement in engagement with the holder, a flat depending shank portion connected with the enlarged portion, and adapted to prevent the scissors contacting with the clothing of the of the scissors wearer, and inwardly-extending spring-fingers formed on the shank portion for holding the scissors, substantially as described.
2. A scissors-holder, comprising a body having awidened top portion with forwardlyprojecting flanges at the sides to engage with i the finger-loops of the scissors and limit the movement thereof, and means on the body for holding the scissors in place, said means comprising springfingers attached to the body and projecting forward and inward to ward each other.
3. A scissors-holder comprising a body, forwardly-proj ectin g flanges extending from said body portion and adapted to receive the finger-loops of the scissors, inwardly-extending fingers below the flanges for holding the scissors in place, and a device for fastening the body to the wearers clothing, said device comprising a gripping-plate, an elbow-lever mounted above and serving to operate the gripping-plate, the said body having tongues struck therefrom, the gripping-plate extending between the tongues and the finger-lever being mounted between the tongues, substantially as set forth.
A scissorsholder, comprising a body, means for holding the scissors engaged therewith, a device for attaching the body to the apparel of the user, said device comprising a spring-plate bent to form an inner portion attached to the body and a free outer or gripping portion proper, and means for operating said outer or gripping portion proper, the said outer orgripping portion proper of the plate having a laterally-bent grippingflange and two supplemental gripping-flanges, one at each end of the first-named flange and in position at the side thereof.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT EDWVARD MOORE.
